Oddly enough, even on those bad teams he still had some pretty good head coaches

I'm mostly surprised not one of the vacancies has been filled yet when we have eight of them. In years with lesser vacancies we've usually seen positions filled by now. Maybe everyone is waiting to see what Daboll decides before moving on.

Sean Payton has informed the Saints that he’s stepping away.

Saints are in salary cap hell so that probably played a factor

Pardon my ignorance but does the coaching salaries play any part in the salary cap? Or are you merely referring to the Saints having a big payroll in general?

He'll be back, I just hope it's not with the Cowboys.

No coaches don't effect the cap with their salary.

Saints are something like 70 million over the cap for next season.

So basically he’ll do TV for a year or two and pick his next head coaching job.

Sucks for Saints fans. Looking at the state or their roster and no Payton it's probably going to be tough sledding for a few seasons. I wonder if this has less to do with recharging his batteries and more that he's wants to get out of a rebuilding situation and wait for a better one. Once the Saints have moved on with a new coach I would imagine they will be expecting far less compensation for releasing him to another team.

Yeah exactly, I think he'll be back too (not saying in NOLA necessarily, but just back in general). There's also been rumours swirling that FOX has offered him big money to possibly replace Troy Aikman on telecasts if he jumps to Amazon, perhaps that enticed him.

I think the past 2 Covid seasons have really taken it out of him, especially given they spent the first month of this season living in hotels after the hurricane. Think he's burnt out.

The Saints' cap situation isn't as bad as it looks. They should be able to get under it fine by restructuring some of their "prime" players and cutting some of their more expensive veterans.

They always seem to draft well, and they'll pick up some extra draft capital and cap space if/when they move Thomas. So long as Loomis doesn't hand out any dumb contracts in FA, they really only have to weather the storm for one year.

Cap is actually easier to manage than it seems, it's nearly half what it was last offseason. (Saints beat writer) Nick Underhill had a great article recently about how easily they could get around it with a few extensions, it's not as bad as last year. But yeah not ideal for sure.

The real issue is I could see the culture falling apart with both Brees and now Payton gone, he had turned it into a successful, desirable place to play. This could be the end of that now. I don't see how they lure someone like Russ to be QB there now, or anyone of that nature. Going to be a wild offseason / next season..

I think trying to lure Russ is a bad idea anyways. The roster is approaching the "old and expensive" phase, which is never a great phase to be in. You probably have 2-3 years tops before Kamara's play falls off and Thomas seems to be on the way out.

Offseason plan should look something like this, IMO:

- Restructure franchise players
- Cut some of the dead weight
- Draft well and maybe look at a high-upside QB who can sit a year and learn (e.g. Willis)
- Grab a bargain-bin veteran QB or run it back with Hill as the starter for one more year

If Brady retires that division is wide ass open next year, almost every team looks like a below average team.

I don't see Brady retiring but, if he does, that division could be the worst division in the NFL.
