I think I read Lorne Michaels to say that the criticism that the current season is not as good as before, started in Season 2 and became an annual complaint ever since.
.
they recently replayed the 1996 Martin Short episode where his monologue was essentially that...(trying to find the actual transcript- but found this review with the brief summary)
“First it was hip, then it got bad but was still hip, then it got… etc.” And then after all of that, he says “And then its second season started…”
Yeah, I'm pretty sure criticism of SNL and whatever new cast there is, has been an ongoing thing for at least 30 years. You also have to give them a bit of a pass as far as this year goes, there's a pandemic and NY has been one of the hardest hit areas.
as for the 90 minute time-frame, I think it allows for more flexibility for the producers to leave skits in that we might never see otherwise, and could end up being some of the best. and it's on at 12:30 at night, at a time in history when everyone has a pvr. leave it long and I can decide what I want to watch and what I think is funny instead of leaving it up to someone else.

I’m curious. My favorite Christmas sketch is the Christmas kangaroo with will Ferrell and Hugh Jackson. Do they still show that on tv? I’m not sure they would haha.
For a while it's basically been Kate MacKinnon and not much else. 10 years ago there was Hader, Samberg, Forte, Armasson. Seems like its been relying on wokeness and guest cameos. Update and the opening have been unwatchable for the last few years.
“I Wish It Was Christmas Today” quickly became a holiday staple on SNL, a show already loaded with decades worth of its own Yuletide traditions. The man-child quartet performed it again just a week later, three times in 2001, twice in 2002 and 2004, and once in 2011. And like any Christmas song worth its weight in frankincense, gold, and myrrh, it began to evolve.
I cannot explain either how much, or why, my wife and I enjoy this little ditty in all of its iterations (but its alot!). a version by Julian Casablancas shows up in many alt/indie christmas playlists too
edit- there is also the Easter one with Simon Cowell. that one was replayed recently - I think it was the Janet Jackson episode
I love each and every one of those. Always make me smile like a kid.

All I could think about during that "It's a wonderful life" skit is how funny it'd be if they beat Mr.Potter with a bell and joked about how angels were getting their wings every time they hit him.

the repeated episode tonight was a spring 1989 episode with Dolly Parton as host and musical guest
what I found interesting is that (this was the classic mid-late 80s cast- Hartman, Carvey, Hooks, Miller, Nealon et) there were 2 featured players Mike Myers and Ben Stiller
this episode features the first ever Sprockets (with Stiller playing the guest) and the first Lothar of the Hill people (again with Stiller featuring as Myers' sidekick). One can imagine the 2 of them working together to gain traction, yet Stiller was gone after 4 episodes
