Default Tell me about Tuktoyaktuk!

So, work is taking me up to the Arctic Ocean, and I’ll be up there for 10 days!

Tell me anything interesting to do up there!

I don’t know, but hoping to do an epically long road trip there some summer.

I have only ever heard of people doing the plane ride from Inuvik and staying for a day. 10 days sounds long.

Take pictures and share them. It'd be interesting to know what its like up there.

10 days in Tuktoyaktuk in January/February? Who did you piss off?

I spent an hour in Naujaat once. Kinda cool because of the Arctic Circle but 10 days sounds really long.

I’m planning to take lots of pictures, probably more picturesque in summer though!

Spent a lot of time between there and Inuvik maybe 12 ish years ago, ask away!

Sadly I believe the ice road closed a few years ago after a land connection was finally built, driving that was definitely the best experience I had up there.

Check out some Pingos, they're definitely more impressive in the summer but still pretty cool covered in snow

Local food is incredible. Groceries are still insanely expensive up there so most people still eat traditionally and I loved it

Sadly I lost all the pictures I had when I deleted my facebook account years ago, but maybe seeing the convo here will jog some more memories or interesting things to share

That sounds like such an awesome opportunity to have. I don't have any knowledge to share, but I hope you can share pictures and experience from your visit with us.

Sunlight is about 4-5 hours/day at this time of year.

Yeah the permanent, year round road opened in 2017 or so, I’m told.

I spent 10 days in eagle plains for work years ago… but in the summer.

I bid you good luck. Stay warm.

I never made it to Tuktoyaktuk but was in Inuvik and Sachs Harbour in Jul, the sun never dropping below the horizon is cool to experience. Also did trips to Taloyoak, Rankin Inlet, Resolute and Iqaluit. Went looking for polar bears but never did spot one. The trips in Dec and Jan were brutal with the temps, have to be extremely careful when driving an have a plan in case you hit the ditch or get stranded.

A lot of people never get to see that part of our country so enjoy it, the local people are very friendly, a lot of smiles and hellos. Truly desolate places that make you appreciate the simple things we enjoy here in the city.

Try and find a local carver and pay them directly for a sweet jade or soap stone indigenous carving. Dancing bears are my favorite.

I was up there a few years ago, took the river boat down the McKenzie to see the sun not set at midnight, as it rolled over into Canada Day. Super cool place. But I guess the winter will be a different experience, as I don't imagine you will be doing the Atlantic swim. I'm not really sure what you will do there for 10 days in the winter, I suspect you will be spending lots of time at the rec centre/ice rink. Maybe some sledding down the town pingo?

Enjoy the stars and norther lights, I'm sure they will be awesome. We didn't see either!

I think you have to jump in the Arctic Ocean while you there. When else will you get the chance.

I want to drive up there sometime now that the road is done.

Thinking of a trip of Yukon river Canoing, Chilkoot Trail, the the long drive up to Tuk.

That could be tough, considering the sea ice...I agree with you, and did it myself, but it was June. Here's my beluga looking self just beofre I dove under.

Spoiler!
