Does that make me a troll around these parts? Geez just asking. I asked because I’m 39, healthy and have both my shots from Pfizer. *May 21 and aug 28 like my doctor recommended. I mentioned the booster to him and he said there is no reason for you to get one.

What ever happened to those Covid treating pills? Do those work on the Omicron or are they not yet approved in Canada. I thought those were going to end the hospital issues caused by Covid.

Ok. Apologies if you were asking a sincere question. But I'd follow the science on this over what a family doc says. You've already had 2 shots so there should be no reason why you wouldn't get the third to prevent serious illness and strain on the healthcare system.

Most of the treatments I'm aware of work best started in the first 5 days. The problem, is, by the time you get symptoms, get a test, and get the results you may be passed 5 days. And most people go downhill later, so you may think you have a milder case initially. I think the pills were ~$750, so it's not cheap enoguh to have everyone take them if they get any sickness. Plus most of the ones in hospital are unvacinated, so the first battle is convincing them Covid exists and is serious, something they've clearly avoided recognizing by that point.
If Omicron is as as contagious as it is purported, it's going to rip through our rural areas in devastating fashion. We can only hope it isn't causing a lot of serious sickness, or our hospitals are going to be slammed again.

You won't even be eligible until 6 months after your second shot FYI.

Why would you wait if you are eligible?

Not great news out of a preliminary study out of South Africa on Omicron:
Quote:
Vaccine effectiveness: The two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination provides 70% protection against severe complications of COVID-19 requiring hospitalisation, and 33% protection against COVID-19 infection, during the current Omicron wave.
Reinfection risk: For individuals who have had COVID-19 previously, the risk of reinfection with Omicron is significantly higher, relative to prior variants.
Severity: The risk of hospital admission among adults diagnosed with COVID-19 is 29% lower for the Omicron variant infection compared to infections involving the D614G mutation in South Africa’s first wave in mid-2020, after adjusting for vaccination status
Children: Despite very low absolute incidence, preliminary data suggests that children have a 20% higher risk of hospital admission in Omicron-led fourth wave in South Africa, relative to the D614G-led first wave.

On the surface, the 29% lower hospital admissions vs. the original strain is great news. However, it seems they didn't account for prior infection (they mention that as a possible confounder), so it's possible that it's just as severe as any other variant, but existing immunity in the South African population is mitigating the severity.

Stop, we have never been "locked up".
We have had restrictions, but not a "lock up".

Semantics.
We're getting our schools and businesses closed, gatherings restricted and being told to stay home again aren't we?
Better?

Also, the lower hospital admissions number can easily be swamped if overall case numbers are much higher. This is severely depressing.

Yeah, but your vaccination record doesn't say anything about what conditions you may also have, which would restrict when you'd be eligible irrespective of time elapsed since dose 2.

I was hanging on to hope of "milder cases" but had that promptly shot down this morning on the radio. Does anyone have good news?
So far we have: - More transmissible
- Poor protection from current vaccination status
- Better, but not great, protection from boosters
- Higher likelihood of severe outcomes with kids
- Greater chance of reinfection
So, uh, when are restrictions being increased? It's Alberta so we'll make it though Christmas but I assume not much longer.
