Less than 400 feet higher than Denver, don't think that's a factor.

Just not sure the Park would allow them to paint lake ice white and paint sponsors onto the ice. Boards and glass I think would be nbd.
Maybe design some white plastic pieces, ensure they float just in case, and then let ice freeze overtop like a rink in an arena. Although that's not as magical as the #realcanadianexperience
But where there's a will, there's a way.

I would love to see a game on the lake but logistically I don't see how it could be done. How do you anchor NHL boards that need to stand up to body checking into the ice? On the lakeside portion of the Chateau I don't think there is enough flat space for a rink. I guess they could use the parking lot where that Parks Canada office/info building is but that isn't as cool and stunning as the actual lake view. If they do it I would think they try to monopolize on the opportunity and play multiple games over two days.

I don't think the limited Hotels at Lake Louise/Banff would be an issue. You can always bus in for the game. Tons of hotels near COP or even DT Calgary.

It would be a kick in the nuts if the Flames don’t play in that game.

Totally agree, I didnt need to have that comment in the second post of the thread. Just was thinking out loud i guess and thinking they should be figuring out how the season will play out before worrying about outdoor games. Upon reflection it would be pretty cool and I am all for it if they can figure it out.

Could easily be -25C that day.

Technically possible for lots of the outdoor game locations, but far more likely at LL.

Probably lower than the outdoor game last year at the Air Force Academy.

Re: On the lake. I mean... there's a first time for everything. This would be special and I'm sure the league is all ears for things that could pique the interest of new viewers.

Once you set up boards, could you not build the ice up higher within the rink area and even out the surface / add the logos and lines beneath a layer? Of course you'd have to get creative with sponsor materials and be environmentally conscious in such a place but it would truly be bringing the game back to its roots in a way that none of the typical outdoor game set ups are quite able to. Would be a really stripped-down set up which is easier to manage with no fans/stands.

Sadly, I was incorrect. Just learned, Parks Canada does indeed object to the NHL’s proposal. I’ve heard the plan for permit approval, is 50/50.

It’s hard to see the ROI on this idea...

Why more likely at LL? Just your own conjecture?

Yeah I can’t say one way or the other, considering the economics have radically changed.

I suppose the NHL is hedging the increased optics/marketability, on the long game. Capture & retain the casual fan, and appease the Rogers board room too.

The goalposts have changed for the league, so I, as an enthusiastic fan, am encouraged both by these creative ideas, and that the league will invest in a better viewer experience in these weird times.

I've become sort of bored of the outdoor arena games but this could be an amazing spectacle.

It's a great idea and would be a wondrous spectacle. Sadly if the Parks hand wringing paper shufflers do approve of the game, some greenie out to save the planet will discover a near extinct ice flea to put a last minute kabosh on it...

Haven't been able to find hard stats to back it up, but I stand by it.

One site I did find with historical data - though I don't think the link will include all of the necessary inputs
https://www.worldweatheronline.com/l...lberta/ca.aspx

January 1 over the last 12 years:

7 days classified as 'freezing fog'...probably not great for that whole mountain spectactle thing
1 day with moderate snow
4 days sunny with highs of: 0, -6, -9, -10

Also important to remember how early the sun sets at that time of year (especially behind the mountains)...doesn't offer much flexibility to wait out a storm.
