Some things just stick with this club. Look at the Anaheim curse that spanned over a quarter of this club's existence.
Flames can't develop a goalie. Whether it's bad luck or incompetence, this is our reality as fans. Make no mistake, I'm cheering for him hard, but let's revisit this thread in 5 years.
The Anaheim curse ended. Why not this?

Scott Wheeler of the Athletic has Wolf ranked as the 5th best NHL goaltending prospect. He's been a fantastic junior player so I have to go with him here.
I always find it interesting to look back at how players were ranked last year. It is important to keep in mind last year was one of the shallowest prospect pools the Flames have had in recent memory.
It's always hard to know with goalies, I'm a big Pettersen fan but his reliance on PP scoring tempers my expectations. Think it's between Phillips and Mackey for me here, went with Phillips due to more familiarity.
I have Wolf in the last of the top tier Flames prospects.
My top two tiers being:
______
Zary
Valimaki
Wolf
--------
Pelletier
Pettersen
Mackey
Poirier
--------

I was kind of expecting these to be top 7 as well (not this exact order)

Jon Gillies was a third round pick that won a NCAA title and made a US world junior team.
His hip injury derailed his career.
He was never an embarrassment.
These polls reflect the fan base' view of the prospect pool every summer. It's not a guarantee that the top five all go on to be hall of famers. Injuries, personal issues, and just stalled development can make what looked like a solid prospect middling in as little as a year.
I didn't say he himself was an embarrassment, sheesh. I wasn't even really serious about the word "embarrassment" because this is just a fun offseason activity. But the fact is CP consistently overrates goalie prospects, every year.

Maybe with the benefit of 20/20 vision but there were reasons at the time that these guys were highly rated.
Plus part of the factor of rating a goalie high is upside. If you get a #1 goalie that's massive. The probability of doing that may be lower - but that's where each of us is ranking on some personal and variable weighting of potential v. upside.
Statements like the above (CP consistently overrates goalie prospects) are an oversimplification of things, and isn't anything resembling a "fact".

OK so what was known at the time and why did people rate him as such?
Parsons had an unreal end to his junior career that caused his stock to rise. Because his development has hit some bumps, that doesn't mean that there weren't rationale reasons for why people rated him as such.
In 2017 we also rated Mark Jankowski as #1. The year Gillies was #3, Emile Poirier was #2
If your point is that we end up being wrong a lot - I guess I'll concede that.
Still going with Mackey as a potential 2nd pair defenseman with offensive upside and a good NHL frame. He's also pretty close to NHL ready, so that ups the ante for me.

Pettersen and his combination of skill and speed has probably the highest ceiling of the remaining forward prospects.
Never seen that video. The shot he makes around 1:10 is filthy though. Also unleashes two very hard shots from mid circle that beat goalies clean around 2:20.

Quick anecdote on my Pettersen vote. My kid committed to play at DU for next September and in the recruiting process, their coach David Carle (Matt Carle’s younger brother) said that he believed that Pettersen was the Flames best prospect. He didn’t expect to lose him after his sophomore year but the Flames were so high on him he decided to leave.
So based on that, my vote goes to Pettersen.

Connah Mackey! Dude is gonna be the Flames' John Marino.

This is the best list of Flames prospects ... well basically ever.
There are 6 guys that have a high degree of playing 100 NHL games....without a drastic improvement in their development trajectory.
Highest risk with the highest reward would be Wolf.
The 5 skaters would be shocking if they topped out at the Bennett/Kylington level.
I expect Bingo to come back with some sort of sanity/enthusiasm check that not all the prospects will play out to the up side, but by the time the Gaudreau/Monahan contracts are done these 5 guys should be in place.
