Yeah I'd gladly take Toews here.
I could see him doing similarly to Eric Staal when he first landed in Minnesota.

You would takes Toews for 10.5M? Or would need salary retained

There is not much I wouldn’t do for someone like Toews/Kopitar/Getzlaf to take a legit run for the next 2-3 years. It’s the only part we are really missing now to make this team a true contender.

Why is this conversation even a thing? We’re not getting Toews, so does it really matter how good he is or isn’t? Three pages of “yes he is/no he isn’t” for a guy that isn’t even on our radar.

He also has a NMC and would surely have more enticing options than Calgary...

Yup. With a big vet 1C (that would bump Money and Backlund down) and Markstrom in net we would absolutely be poised to make some noise.

Toews is unlikely but a deal centered around Hanifin likely is our best option to bring in a top 6 forward, preferably a top line player. If Valimaki can step into the top 4 that moving Hanifin makes a lot of sense.

Your right, we need that cap space to sign Ovechkin after this season.

I like Toews (salary retained) too I just thought it was funny that the "Proof" that he was still good were his stats over the last two seasons when Gaudreau has better numbers yet is being run out of town by some. I didn't think a post on this ridiculous topic was going to be taken so seriously or I would have put my flame suit on (no pun)
100 games and playoffs since 2014 is kinda cherry picking too IMO
back on topic lets get Kane, Toews, and keep Gaudreau!
Lucic/Ryan/4th for Kane/Toews 50% retained!

Don’t know why everything comes back to Gaudreau. Toews is a center and the upgrade he would be on Monahan is so significant that it’s almost impossible to imagine. Gaudreau/Lindholm/Toews is the kind of top line that could compete for a championship.

This Athletic article, for those who have access, says Dominik Kahun is the 4th best UFA left. I don’t think the Flames can afford many of the other players on the list because of their names. But I would love to see the Flames try to get Kahun for all the cap space they have left after they sign Kylington for league minimum (or close to it).
I don’t know if about $1.15M would be enough (you’d send down a $700K player (Gawdin/Nordstrom/Rinaldo) plus the Flames would have an additional $450K in space). I guess I’m hoping as time goes on, the price for guys like Kahun goes down. I know $1.15M seems like very little.
In this situation, I’d see the Flames forwards like this:
Gaudreau - Backlund - Tkachuk
Monahan - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Kahun - Bennett - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Gawdin/Nordstrom
Rinaldo
What I like about this is it gives Bennett two solid wingers. I want to set Bennett up for success. Overall, I think the top 9 would also be solid.

I keep coming back to the changes in our roster already, and then looking back to the Dallas series...and then looking at the "top teams", looking back at the Flames roster...and thinking "huh...we're pretty good".
Against Dallas, if we had Markstrom - we win that series...
And then add in an impact top-4 defenceman who I think will be looked at as our 2nd best defenceman by the end of 2020/2021 in Valimaki...I think Valimaki will quickly be looked at as an improvement on Brodie.
And then add in the improvement we're likely to see from Hanifin and Andersson, while also replacing Gustafsson and Forbort with Tanev and Kylington.
And then look at the confidence gains we saw in Bennett, Dube, and Lucic while subtracting Jankowski...
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Nordstrom - Ryan - ?
Robinson
Giordano - Tanev
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Kylington
?
Markstrom
Rittich
...if we make no further changes but fill in those question marks with "money puck" high value signings, we're an improved team. Then look at coaching stability with a coach the team seems to respect and not loathe - I think things are looking pretty good.
Good candidates for those "?" roles:
Defence: Kevin Connauton, Ben Hutton, Slater Koekkoek, Jan Ruutta or go internal with Carl-Johan Lerby or Connor Mackey although cap-wise and depth wise it'd be smarter to snag one of the 4 UFA's listed at league-minimum.
Forward: Ilya Kovalchuk, Josh Leivo, Melker Karlsson
I'd really like to see Kovalchuk signed. 4th line RW who can then also play as a PP specialist on the point. Can move up the line-up if injuries occur.
PP1
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Kovalchuk - Lindholm/Andersson
PP2
Lucic - Backlund - Mangiapane
Giordano - Lindholm/Bennett/Dube
PK1
Backlund - Lindholm
Giordano - Tanev
PK2
Ryan - Nordstrom
Hanifin - Andersson

Everyone knows that Towes brings 100% more to the table than Johnny when you look at things other than scoring.
The fact that you ignored that while suggesting that Johnny is in the same league was why your post was immediately railed upon.

I agree that flames get by Dallas with markstrom. I just don’t think they go any further than 2nd round if the top line doesn’t show up. Sure you can win a round , maybe 2 without the first line doing much but eventually it catches up. Nothing I have seen so far has me believing that first line can show up in playoffs. Hopefully they prove me wrong this year.

Definitely the biggest problem. Sure, having lights-out goaltending can mask some of your problems and maybe steal you a round or two, but you have to have everyone chipping in if you're in for the long haul.

Who else would be bidding for Toews if he asked for a trade? Maybe toews wants to win a cup in a canadian city...
