I知 an old guy Scorp but not old enough to have seen this live. Espo was a force for this series, no doubt, and leader of the Canadians. But all over the ice was not exactly his style of play.

Cournoyer on the other hand...

Don't you guys know that Canada has been doing the dirty works for the US for years now and the States get all the credit?

Latest example - see the Huawei arrest...

Strange Brew -- I've seen all the games and I didn't mean Espo was darting back and forth up and down the ice. I know Roadrunner was the flashy type but Esposito was just an incredibly smart player. Made all the right plays and went to all the right spots. Exactly the type of player they needed against the Soviets, because he was able to go head-to-head with their collective hockey IQ. And the way he rallied the Canadians in Vancouver was incredible.

Yes sir. Espo blamed his spill on some petals that might have been left on the ice as just prior to the intros a couple of Russian flower girls had skated around both teams.

The U.S. pretty much single-handedly won WWII, too.

My bad, Scorp is right, Park wore #5 in the '72 Summit Series, Lapointe wore #25.

You may be joking, but you should check out some of the exhibits at the Smithsonian. Can't count how many times I read "The United States and others..." when I went there.

I am old enough and did watch all this live...on our 15" black and white TV.

Espo had a tremendous shot and was a load to try and defend in front of the net, but you're right he certainly wasn't fleet of foot.

So many memories/stories of that time....IMO the most under rated guys were Bill White and Gary Bergman.

The one thing those who werent around for it can never understand was the mystery the Soviets were to us and certainly the hate between the countries. The geopolitical climate of that time was one of distrust, the highest level the cold war got to sans the Bay of Pigs and how truly evil communism and communists were. Its all we heard and knew for the most part, certainly as a child at the time.

Looks like I found the old fart trivia club featuring special guest Scorpion.

I feel young reading this.

WW1 is worse. You'd think they single handily did everything themselves, and obviously getting an influx of fresh troops at the end of the war was huge, but that's a little too much credit to be taking for a country that was in a three and a half year long war for the last 11 months

I am also old enough, however I didn't get to see every game because of time differences. Esposito wasn't all over the ice, but I'd say he was the team leader.

It just seemed that way to me when I was watching the games, although maybe I was focusing on him specifically.

I'm ancient and got to watch the series live. Esposito was a big guy who would position himself in the slot and dare others players to move him. Used his quick wrist shot to score many goals from there.

The referring was horrible and the Canadians had to deal with the West German pair of Joseph Kompalla and Franz Baader. The players and coaches called them Baader and Worse. It lead to JP Parise going after Kompalla with his stick in game 8.

If Henderson didn't score his famous goal the series would have ended tied. However the Russkies had other plans and were going to declare themselves the winner based on goals differential.
