I like Derek Ryan. I like the comparison of a less gritty Yelle

I like Derek Ryan. That being said, we still gotta shed some salary next year and he's on my short list as being replaceable and tradeable. But this season he should be an important although not key part of the playoff run.

By that logic, if you moved Ryan to the 3rd line, there would cease to be a problem.

I don't even have a problem with his usage on the 2nd PP unit. Right-handed C who can win faceoffs, how many players do we have like that? Winning faceoffs is key for PP success and Ryan is probably the best option here for PP2. Ideally you'd want to have a better option but they don't.

For a guy who has effectively replaced the position of Stajan this year while adding minutes to the PK and 2nd PP and is doing so for the exact same 3.125 cap hit it really is one of the better UFA signings so far for Treliving.

He got a lot of hate earlier in the season. But color me shocked a new player took some time to adjust. He's gotten better as the seasons gone on. I liked the Stajan as the person, but was sick of seeing him on the ice. I'm glad Ryan's been able to replace him and bring something extra.

Not everyone can step in and be above a PPG like Lindholm can. Good to see Derek starting to carry the puck and make plays with it with confidence again.

It is clear that the coaching staff have a different zone entry plan for PP2 than PP1. PP1 is essentialy give it to Johnny and see what he can do. The zone entry design of PP2 is predicated on quick forehand to forehand passing between Bennett and Ryan as the move through the neutral zone.
Based on the design, I see no better option than Ryan. The only option I might prefer would be for Lindholm to play that role and have Rasmus replace Lindholm on PP1.
The flames right handed offensive depth chart is quite limited:
1. Lindholm
2. Ryan
3. Hathaway
4. Czarnik

While he isn't a right hand center Bennett is pretty darn good at winning faceoffs on his off side.

Bennett is already on the second power play unit. The goal would be to add another guy to the unit who is better offensively and as good at faceoffs as Ryan.
I agree, if the biggest problem with Ryan is that is a little lacking offensively to play maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of power play time, it's not a huge issue.

I can't get used to the Doc nickname. Anytime I see Ryan referred to as Doc, I have to stop and think about who they're talking about

I'm coming around on Ryan. He's very versatile and is surprisingly good at making the seeing-eye pass. I can see why Peters would like him, but I still believe he has relied on him a little much, considering the rest of the team. I love his work in the dot, so a great pick up there.

Stop it. Ryan is tenth in points among all Flames players while logging only the eight most icetime of the forwards.
You are just completely wrong about this.

Dramatic change of heart for me..
Was weary at first hearing about signing..
Hated the signing when Ryan struggled mightily for the first 30 odd games.
Have grown to really like him since he has become a regular contributor.
Now I'm even defending the guy as well as my earlier hate.. I really like him and he reminds me of a less gritty Yelle for sure.

Less gritty but a little more skilled.
But shares the most important attribute which is "the guy you want out there at the end of the game", along with Lindholm
This team has lacked enough true two way players but I feel that's changed now with additions of guys like Hanifin, Lindholm and Ryan.

Absolutely agreed. He's a guy that helps win important games when you're a contender, imo.
