Less than $7M might be above the Gio cap LOL.

In looking at the poll choices, is it realistic a 2 year deal could get done for $4 or $5 million per? There aren't many comparables for that term at all. My guess is he would still expect to be higher, wouldn't he?

I think tkachuk is much more valuable
Laine is a goal scorer and that's it, hes not a 200 foot player, and hes not even a great chance creator either. He lives and dies by shooting percentage.
Tkachuk is a complete player, with leadership qualities to boot
That's not even factoring in their off ice qualities, notice the silence from tkachuk, while laine is basically calling out his team and teammates that most of them arent worthy of playing with him
Laine will probably score 50 a few more times in his career, on years with a hot power play and when his shooting % gets around 20. But hes also gonna have years where he doesnt crack 50 points

^Tkachuk is not a stellar defensive player. He is a winger with a very, very good 2 way centre
I will gently reference Mike Smith’s awesome puck handling throwing pucks to Chucky who was parked on the far blue line, setting him up for a 1 on 3 turnover.

Tkachuk is as good defensively as any other 20 year old 70+ point player I can remember, Crosby was good in the day, Marner last year but the number of players are small. Tkachuk is smart and not lazy.

Tkachuk makes his teammates better. Dubas said the same thing about Marner when he gave him all that money. He got paid because he is a great player that makes his teammates better.

No, Tkachuk will not sign for that little. And any short term deal will have larger last year to ensure the qualifying offer is quite high.

When Matthew Tkachuk went on the ice by himself to start working out yesterday, I joked, 'Too early. There's no goalie for you to run over out there.' He said, "We'll find one."

While in Tampa, in his first true test as Lightning GM, Julien BriseBois seems to be holding pretty firm with unsigned RFA center Brayden Point. A source told me on Thursday morning that the two sides remain far apart. Ditto on the Matthew Tkachuk front, which was status quo as of Wednesday.

If the Flames and Tkachuk are really far apart and he's not on opening day roster, we'll see out of Dube, Mangiapane, Czarnik, Reider (PTO) who steps up. Huge opportunity for them.

No one knows. Unlike those organizations and agents who like to pander to the media, the Flames and Lightning have both pretty much been in lock-down on these critical negotiations.
But, to your point (haha!), I would guess his salary ask is right in range with the Marner deal. If you are suggesting this as a solution in the event that the Flames and Tkachuk are unable to come to terms, that is a non-starter. The Flames aren't going to pay more to Point than they are negotiating to pay Tkachuk.

Setting aside Gio, 6.75MM is pretty much the upper limit for a 2nd line winger in 2019 when the cap is 81.5MM
Tkachuk will likely improve to be a first line winger and potentially a perennial all-star and win nhl award(s), at which point he will deserve more money.
Rebuilding teams should have cap space to commit to long term deals (overpay now and save in long run) for 2 or 3 players that will climb the ranks of all-time franchise records.
Contending teams would not normally have the cap space to commit long term deals which require room to accommodate long term inflation of salary cap over 7 to 8 years. Unless that team has 2 all-stars on entry level deals, then you have the luxury to invest current cap space in a long term investment.
Contending teams normally have to trade away depth to accommodate long term deals, and then you are no longer a true contender. Your depth leaves you somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Need a 2 yr deal around 6MM if the Flames are going to be a legit contender in 2019

Tkachuk is already a 1st line player, he just happens to play on the 2nd line.

I was optimistic this was going to get done before camp but now it looks like this could leak into the season.
A 1-2 year deal then a big 8 year deal would be ideal in my opinion. Pay Tkachuk $10M+ once he has a couple more seasons like last year under his belt. In 3 years he gets the C

15 days is heaps of time. I am confident a deal will get signed before game 1. It just wont be the term that fans want.

If he isn't signed by the final week of training camp, shut him down for the year. Yeah, it would hurt the team, but so would having him come in post training camp and delivering a Nylander-esque performance. It's been shown that players who miss camp rarely catch up to the rest of the league, so if he's unlikely to perform up to his salary, make him miss the season and establish that hard line in the sand for future negotiations. It's kind of like Brian Burke and his refusal to trade Cammalleri for a pick, trying to show you won't give things away for a diminishing return.
