So the Pens end up adding salary, for two very meh players. Either they think Hornqvist is about to fall off a cliff or Matheson is going to blossom suddenly.

They added Sceviour? I feel like that made the trade even worse for Pittsburgh lol.

I've been patiently waiting for a team lower in the standings to leave enough cap and roster spots open at the beginning of a season to steal some of the better waiver assets, and sign sad UFA players to one year contracts. Last year a couple of the guys put on waivers were pretty valuable, but there wasn't a lot of movement.
Com'on Florida.

Of course there isn't alot of movement, the playoffs aren't done yet. This has been way more movement than we've ever seen in the playoffs.

Yeah this is puzzling, Sceviour was the missing piece to get the deal done.
I don't understand this for Pittsburgh at all, it's a huge huge gamble. They're taking a reclamation project that has six years left on his deal at a significant cap hit. Meanwhile Hornqvist brings snarl and net presence what Florida badly needed. Seems like a huge win for Florida.

I liked Sceviour, but then again, I tend to fall in love with bottom 6 grinder types. Happy to have Hornqvist, but I'm very concerned that his age and style of play will lead to him falling off a cliff any day now. Could still be a very bad deal for Florida, but at least they clear some cap space.

Hornqvist has already fell off the cliff, always injured, declining points, takes lazy penalties and will be 34 next season. Given his talent at least Matheson at 26 could rebound with a good team,a good D partner and direction. I think this could be a huge win for Rutherford and the Pens.

Hornqvist still gives you 20 goals and goes in front of the net, which the Panthers really need. I'd be worried about him falling off the cliff the third year much more than his first.
Matheson on the other hand is a bad deal from the get go and signed for an eternity. IMO he's the one who has to turn it around and even if he does it may end up being just an "ok" deal for Pittsburgh. If he doesn't, it's an absolute disaster.

That’s the only possible rationale for the trade. I think the odds are not in their favour, given his stats so far. That said, they certainly did it with Schultz.

I know everyone loves trades and even I myself would love to see the Flames make some moves but these throwing stuff against the wall in hopes of something sticking trades would terrify me if my team was involved.

Matheson replaces Schultz who had a 5.5 M cap hit.
Hornquist was really really close to being a buyout 33 years old 32 pts. 5.3 m x 3 years playing on a team with Malkin and Crosby.
The Penguins replaced him with Kapanen.
The penguins still have their core with 4 players > 33 Malkin, Crosby, Letang and Johnson
Supposedly Penguins have an internal Cap of 75M which is what they are at right now

Hornqvist is the best player right now obviously, and maybe for the first year, but I think the Penguins are going to look like they won the trade by year two at the latest

Hornqvist got those 32 points in 52 games.
But moreover, the Pens moved completely sideways with this move - it doesn’t accomplish much of anything.

Kassian got 34 pts in 59 games. want to sign him to a 5.2 x 3 ?
Is Crosby/Malkin that much of a downgrade from Draistl/ McDavid ?

You consider Johnson one of their 4 core players?

Yeah, that's a 50 point pace Hornqvist was putting up. With probably losing Dadanov and Hoffman, Honrqvist might find himself playing with Barkov and Huberdeau

Hornqvist played the majority of his time away from Malkin and Crosby, although TBF a lot of his points were PP when he would have been with them. But moreover, he's got a far better long term record than Kassian if you want to play that game.

This is a pretty bad take. Matheson isn't replacing anyone, he's a guy who's trying to find consistency and not be a liability. If he plays bottom pairing he'll be fine but way overpaid and way too long.
Hornqvist was never close to being bought out and still has value around the league. His third year is also easy to buyout if necessary at 1.7 million. He also played away from Crosby and Malkin- they had Guentzel and Rust at RW.

It would be borderline core.
But he got put out 19:28 per game and solid 3rd in total TOI for the team over the season. Might have been more accurate to say important player rather than core as Core has variable connotations.
Important young players on the Penguins (under 25) McCann 24 and John Marino 23 and Marcus Pettersson 24 Kapenen 24
Be interesting to see how they rebuild over the next 3 years.
