Yelle is one of my all time favorites but I gotta go with Backlund. He's a lifetime Flame and the perfect example of why you don't give up on late bloomers.

Colin Patterson was my favorite shutdown player back in the heyday. He was a real heart and soul player for the Flames throughout the entire 80's era.
Every time I think of Gary Leeman's stupid face I want to punch him in it. Moving on...
Kelly Kisio had a great career, but he joined the Flames at the very end of it and didn't really make much of an impact during his time.
It's not Jeff Shantz's fault that he was asked to be a 1st line center. Decent player who had his best years for the Flames, but by no means the best ever.
Stephane Yelle was my favorite Flame for a long, long time. He did everything you want in a defensive center. Had his most productive 5 years for the Flames, but nothing to write home about offensively.
Owen Nolan played one relatively decent year for the Flames, and was definitely a fan favorite, but no way could he be the best of all time in such short tenture.
Lastly, we have Mikael Backlund. I'll give you the short list:
He's been with the Flames since 2008/09, which is over a decade now. He's 8th all time in games played for the franchise with 690. He got off to a somewhat slow start, but found a way to become one of the best defensive centers in the game. He was never going to be a superstar offensive player, but he's pretty consistently put up about a 0.5 point per game pace over his career, with a couple of uptick seasons where he was an absolutely vital piece of the team. His points put him 20th all time in Flames scoring history. He still is vital, acting as an alternate captain and becoming a true heart and soul player for the franchise.
If it's not Backlund, I don't know who it could be.

I'm very comfortable voting Backlund here
this thread is a great place to think about older Flames players and bring their contributions to light
Patterson- great defensive forward, remember him first as part of the "Dice line" with Wilson and Kromm, but came to prominence playing the steadying role with 2 HOFers in their prime on arguably the league's best 2 way line with Gilmour and Mullen. a great member of the alumni community
Yelle also will be fresh in more people's mind. amazing at what he did and a key player in the 04 run. gritty
Backlund though is a defensive stalwart like the 2 above but also (despite him being bemoaned at times) brings more offence. He's been the anchor of one of the league's better two way lines for a while, 13 or so years in the Flames org and he hates the right teams in a good way
brief shutout to MacMillan- had a 100 pt season in Atlanta, only played 100 games in Calgary but helped net us Lanny

You are definitely right. The Flames should just pick up every first round pick that hasn't worked out over the past few years from other teams because they can just be late bloomers. Because you know, it is super common that these go from bust to effective players all the time.
1st round pick for Conner Bleackley or Michael Dal Colle? They might just be late bloomers.

I had some strong consideration for Patterson and Yelle, but Backlund wins this one for me.
Nolan is probably the best player of that bunch but not in a Flames uniform.
Kelly Kisio is probably the best Calgary Wrangler of all-time though.

I went with Patterson only because he was a fairly key piece on a really successful team that had multiple good years.
Backlund has been a good player on a lot of bad and/or underachieving teams.

This is the first really tough one for me. Dice line vs 3M line.
Patterson was an underrated member of the Cup team and a Selke finalist that year. He has also become a major member of the alumni in retirement.
Backlund has been a heart and soul guy for so long and has finished in the Selke top-10 twice.
"Pitter patter, let's get at 'er Patter."

Yelle was an intregal part of the best hockey we've seen since '89, Patterson was a huge part of the cup team. Sometimes it's not just about the points.

Wrestled with Yelle, Backlund and Patterson - and ended up going with Colin. Such a great two way player and glue guy on great teams. But what tipped it over for me was his contributions to the city as a member of the alumni.
Either choice is valid though. Yelle is one of my all time favorites.

I voted Backlund.
But Patterson was on one of the Flames best lines EVER. EH-VUR. He needs some respect.
And Yelle. Damn he was good.

once we are done the main exercise we will have to do a list of 'top guys screwed by having the wrong number'...
Loob and Macoun come to mind, but we are discussing a few good ones in this thread...and I'll save some of the other numbers for their threads when they come up but there are going to be some pretty interesting ones

I voted Backlund due to him being one of my favourite players and his longevity with the team but I feel like if I was a bit older that Patterson would have probably taken the vote.
Was a great defensive player in his prime with the Flames, Finished 2nd in Selke voting in our cup winning season, and was a big part of two teams that went to the finals.

Backs is going to win this one in a landslide, but I have always had a hockey-crush for Ol' Yeller. Started when he was an Av and only intensified when he came to Calgary.
Sandbox gets my vote.
