"No decision has been made... but it would difficult to image that golf is an essential service"
Cool bro. According to the province, non-essential businesses can still open if they have not been told to close before. My guess is Nenshi only has the power to open and close city owned golf courses, thank God.

If a business is not listed here as an essential service, it can still continue to operate if:
the business doesn’t fall under previous business, workplace and facility closures
If courses are open and we're all still on lock-down it's going to be impossible to get a tee time.
If golf courses do open, they will be like the song Solitaire - the only game in town. They can charge full rack rate for twilight times and sell over-priced $10 beer to the crowd.

I think there will be some major changes, but I expect non-city courses to be open.
I've heard the following:
1) one person per power cart - unless the other person is in your immediate family.
2) no cash at the course, plastic or member account charges only
3) no tee markers - pick a spot and tee it up
4) no rakes in bunkers. give yourself a reasonable lie and move on.
5) a piece of PVC pipe, diameter larger than the flag stick, inserted into cups so ball cannot fall in the cup
6) No Guests - this one is somewhat contentious, but we'll see how it work. I would love to be able to take my golf-starved customers out for a round, it really might help win future work!

Yeah this is probably why courses won't be opened, just like the parks people aren't going to be able to behave appropriately (not accusing you -- but I'm sure there are plenty of less responsible people out there)
Membership and advanced booking has it privileges. Btw I won't forget should the season open.
Agreed, I am at Priddis and I would be really interested to see what this looks like IF they do open. With a senior type-membership, would they be more or less likely to go during this? Hard to say.
will be interesting to see where some of these courses put their green fees at for 2020.
i would think that a place like heritage might have trouble filling their tee sheets at $130/round in what will be a tough economy - but what do i know

I'm as hopeful as anyone but there's no way courses will be open when they're closing national and provincial parks.
You could easily justify golf as being extremely low risk with certain measures like Vansmack mentioned but so far some parts of containment have not been justified.
An environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own, so that their existing views are reinforced and alternative ideas are not considered.

Heatherglen has maintenance workers out on the course today. Could mean they think they're opening or could just be starting work on the off chance they're allowed to open.

Either way, I took it as a good sign.
I saw some Canada Geese fly by today, which made me think that golf is not too far off, then I remembered.
Anyways, my fathers course on vcr island has been closed for about 3 weeks or more, but apparently the maintenance staff is still there everyday, otherwise the place just gets overtaken by weeds etc and would be tough to get back into playing condition.
Yeah, I was trying to take it as a positive, but realized it's more likely that maintenance staff will basically have to start taking care of their courses soon even if there's a 5% chance they're allowed to open.
Courses will open. People will complain that golfers get to golf while they don't get to do whatever it is they do. Courses will be closed several days later.
Deena Hinshaw just stated that golf courses are viewed as non-essential services and cannot be accessed by the public. Workers are allowed to be on site, but the public is not. The government will be issuing a formal statement about it later today.
