Watched Halston this past week only because of Ewen McGregor, and although I don’t see him acting too much anymore, he did really well playing an eccentric character. Really good actor. The series though, very meh in story or action. The production was okay I guess given it is Netflix’s high budget norm.
Best way to describe it would be if Jason Segals character from Forgetting Sarah Marshal was stuck on the Castaway island instead of Tom Hanks with a bunch of video equipment.
It is truly something different.

It's really good. It's all filmed in one room with just him controlling lights, cameras, and sound. He puts a huge amount of work into all three and makes music videos that are really impressive. There aren't a lot of laughs, but the few there are all hit perfectly. "White Woman's Instagram" is spot on.
No volleyballs are ####ed, however.

His "Can't Handle This" song from Make Happy is absolute genius. I still watch it a few times a year. Gives me shivers.
Make Happy is obviously a better special overall than What (he was like 20 years old when he made What, and it shows in a bunch of it), but I think the ending bit of that one actually tops Can't Handle This.
The weird thing is it's like 6 minutes of... miming? Lip sync miming? Yet it's genius.

It's good, got a bit of a Mandalorian vibe going on. Unlikely parental/child figure duo on the run, finding new Peril every week. Heavy handed on the exposition through flash back, which I always enjoy. Multiple storylines converging on a central conflict, they psyched me a couple of times, trying to string connections together. And an abrupt ending that demands season 2 ASAP.

If you liked Dark, the same team has a new series out today. Looks to be a combination German and English.
Anyone else watching this? I'm two episodes in and really enjoying it. The production, music, and even the acting remind me a lot of Dark (which I loved).
So far it looks like it will be action/adventure meets apocalypse. Many cool places they can take this given the different tribes and characters they have already introduced.

It's the Road meets Sesame Street. We need lots of people to watch so that there's a season 2!
Random fact about Sweet Tooth. The writer of the original comic series is Jeff Lemire. He grew up in a small village about 15 minutes from where I live, here in Southwestern Ontario. He wrote the Essex County Trilogy and has had a lot of other successes.

Lemire is one of my favourite writers in comics right now. His catalog is so diverse.
Descender/Ascender is an amazing series (optioned for TV by NBS/Universal)
Black Hammer is a lot of fun. A fun play on characters like the Justice League and Avengers.
Gideon Falls is great. Feels very much like an illustrated HBO show. It was picked up by the company that produces The Witcher and The Expanse.
He illustrated Secret Path, a collaboration with Gord Downie from the Tragically Hip.
He's also done a bunch of DC and Marvel work.
