True, though it's only 1.4m more than Tanev. I guess in a perfect world we don't sign Tanev and do this deal instead.

Well just like it was pointed out in the other thread that Tanev is better than Forbort, Gus and these other guys signing cheap deals, we can also say Schmidt is better than Tanev.
But Flames didn't have cap space to be able to do a deal like this so point is moot.
For Van, this seems like a better outcome than OEL, doesn't it?

They just got a #2 dman for a 3rd round pick. Not sure Vancouver are the ones I'd call dumb here

Straight up, definitely. But at $5.95M, it's a different argument.

Often injured, 30~40 points for 6 million? I think I'd rather Tanev imo.

Is it?
Edit - Looking into it, I'd say they're about even. They're the right amount for both players.

Tbh I didn't realize Schmidt is 29. Thought he was like 26.
That changes things a bit for sure.

Not really from the Canucks perspective, they had an asset that analytics said had been declining for two years. They did not re-sign that asset. They then fluked out into a great deal because Vegas did not do their trading business in advance.

So Schmidt, who is one year younger, is immune to the rigors of age, unlike Tanev?
Let's try to be fair and impartial here.

I never mentioned age, I said that Tanev has been declining according to analytics for the last two years.

I suspect Schmidt's analytics will decline this season in Vancouver Vs. playing in Vegas
5.95X5 and a 3rd rounder
Vs.
4.5x4
A lot of Apples and oranges, every deal needs to be treated like Tre passed on it for some reason
The guy has a M-NTC too, likely wasn't even an option

His ice-time has been pretty much identical for the last 4 years. So Green doesn't agree with you.
People put way too much stock into this or that particular analytic to support a narrative.

Meh. Not sure how if you're Winnipeg or Vancouver you can't do these deals. Otherwise Vegas still gets Pietrangelo and deals good players to the other conference. Then you still have to contend with Vegas and you haven't strengthened your team either.
Not that it makes Benning smart. He could have kept Toffoli and Stecher and probably been better without giving up the 3rd.

Schmidt is a lefty as well; good pick up by Vancouver after whiffing on a lot of their own UFA’s
I’m still taking Tanev at 4x4.5 and not giving up a 3rd versus Schmidt and his contract and giving up a 3rd

Hamonic's ice time went up each year with the Flames, so I guess he improved each year? Ice time is usually reflective of the fact that a coach has to put someone on the ice, not necessarily whether the person they put on the ice is any good.
