Well legally they could protect themselves. Financially they could benefit.
But who really wants to deal with all that bull#### that comes with building it?

If a project like Keystone gets canceled, where does all the piping and stuff go?

Highest bidder or to a scrap yard. The problem is the coating on the linepipe is going to wear down as it just sits there season to season without being in the ground. Eventually they will need to strip it all and re-coat it if they plan to use the same pipe, which is still the cheapest option since the price of linepipe is crazy these days.

What’s being used as inner coating nowadays? Paint or some kind of plastic?

I understand some investors are looking into building the World's Largest pipe-based obstacle course and jungle gym...

It was foolish to shut it down in the first place but that didn’t stop anyone, Joe. Why don’t you throw your money at it?

There was also concern that the pipe was no longer useable...due to sitting stacked in a field(s) for so long.
The bottom layer might be "out of round"...
Stack em 3-4 layers high and let gravity do its thing over 10 years and there might be an issue...

I cannot think of an ultra intelligent quip to go with this link, but it's news. Not sure if a CNRL/Suncor/Cenovus/etc could afford to take over CNOOC's assets or if this is a way for one of the companies who have dropped assets in Russia to make their way back into the Canadian game....again.

It is interesting their concern is sanctions...are they planning something? Maybe don't plan stuff that will get you sanctioned.

The Canadian SAGD assets are old sub par projects at this point. Not much value there so they'll be cheap relative to other SAGD sales.

Maybe yes, maybe no, but maybe in the future? Either way, the last couple months have shown that the risk of asset seizure is a lot higher than it used to be, and clearly they are de-risking away from the West. There are some tectonic shifts going on right now as the world deglobalizes and positions itself into new economic spheres. China is moving away from the West, and will be shifting that capital to places where it can have more influence...ie Africa.

That was my first thought when I read it. What sanctions are they most afraid of? Seems like something is afoot.

This is likely a concern about western sanctions on countries which are potentially seen as allies or propping up Russia in the war against Ukraine. China has not and does not appear to be interested in penalizing Russia.

I'm more thinking along the lines of their potential actions around Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the South China Sea. Get their ducks lined up before taking action.
