No. All players play during the regular season. Not all advance to the playoffs.

I’m aware of how the voting works. Question is who are the best defensemen in the league vs. who hockey writers think had the best regular season.

Also out of the playoffs in four games: the team with Crosby and Malkin as their top two centres. I don’t think there will ever be one specific formula for winning in hockey.

Gio should win this by a comfortable margin. The only danger is eastern writers going full Hedman with their votes

I'd be floored if Giordano loses. Haven't seen any indication he'll lose.

Friedman was basically campaigning for Gio. There was one segment on HNIC where him and Hrudey basically peer pressured Kypreos into putting Gio #1 on his ballot. He did the same thing with Ekblad the year he won the Calder.

Friedman is one of the few guys who I actually believe watch a tonne of hockey. He's Bob Mckenzie in his prime. I think guys really trust his opinion.

I'm a bit sad for Gio in that I'm pretty confident he will win the award, and this is probably his best chance for his career given that he doesn't have many years left, but this individual regular season award will always be connected to such a disappointing team performance for the group he leads. Gio seems like both a great guy and a great teammate. I wish he could be in a situation to win that award and have it go along with a post-season where the team he leads at least played their best and went out with respect.

The Hockey News has a fairly detailed breakdown of the three players in an article today. They predict Giordano wins in a walk.

For those that not only witnessed, but profited from that eye-popping, Norris-caliber campaign, a single word seemed right to assess the captain's worth.
"Everything," said Travis Hamonic, dolloping a heaping helping of praise on fellow blueliner Mark Giordano.
"Everything," repeated rookie Rasmus Andersson, without a smidge of uncertainty.
"Everything," No. 5's longtime teammate and fellow locker-room spearhead, Mikael Backlund, added. "He does it all.
"If Gio doesn't win (the Norris), there's something wrong."
Is there an echo in here?
"I'm not dumb to the fact that I'm getting older here," chuckled the Flames captain. "The key, I think, to sustaining a high level of play, is to understand that. Don't fight it. Work with it.
"I'm going to be 36 when we drop the puck next year. But I don't feel that way at all. I feel like I'm coming off a year where I played my best hockey. Some might think that would take a toll over the course of - probably - 90-plus games when you factor in the pre-season…
"I don't feel that way at all. I want to keep going.
"This is the best I've ever felt, physically.
"And you know what? I think that kind of a positive mindset helps. I'm not going into the summertime dreading the work I have to put in. Just the opposite. I'm motivated. I want to go and have a great off-season so that when we're back here in September, I can step right back in and elevate my game even further."

I agree that a player’s impact on team success should be part of an award like the Hart or Norris. Not a dealbreaker, but a consideration.
As far as playoff awards, or considering playoff performances into awards...is the Stanley Cup not enough?

I bet Gio wins the Norris, and then has an even better year next year.

I actually think Burns would be the biggest competitor. I mean, 83 points is pretty impressive and from what I've seen Burns is pretty good player.
He won it two seasons ago with "only" 76 points. But yea, I think Gio is the fave

"I would want Giordano on my team before I’d want those points guys. Giordano has like 75 points or something and he plays good defence. From me, based on how I know he plays, I think he should be the frontrunner.

Yeah like I said, Gio is the fave.
Also Doughty is an idiot. That is all.

I'd bet my house on Gio winning this.
