He had no attachment to the City? He played here for 9 years. I’d bet he made several close/life long friends while living here. Just because Calgary wasn’t home doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an attachment to the City.
Gaudreau didn’t like the guaranteed $84M, so he walked? I find that hard to believe. Especially in light of what he signed for, which was $15M less. I bet that’s an open wound for him. Had he known that’s what he was leaving on the table, I’d be surprised he still leaves. He got burnt. Badly.
If it was his plan all along to leave Calgary, then that has to be one of the worst planned exit any player in any sport ever has executed.

I don't know about Oliver, but he said he wanted to come back but that Washington offer if true makes sense for someone to go after that.

I don’t know know if he acted in good faith or not, but I knew the minute he said that he wanted to wait until the end of season to talk about a contract, that he was being pulled in another direction and the Flames were working against external forces.
I’ve seen this exact same decision making behaviour in everyday life with regular people, and I don’t think hockey players are that much more complicated. If someone is procrastinating or non-committed, there is a good chance that they are just trying not to upset people because the answer isn’t what they want to hear. There is always a chance that you can pull them back from those external forces, but with the Flames being the smaller market Canadian team they are, it’s a big gamble.
That is why I was saying that the Flames should have traded him before the season began. Granted, that was one hell of a fun season watching that line. In fact, I would bet that the success they had that year might have almost worked in convincing JG to stay. I imagine it was a hard choice and the easiest thing for him was to just let the clock run out on July 1st.

Oliver situation to me seems simple. He got bad information, Flames moved on and signed a better player, and he got this deal.

I am not sure if I believe the Washington rumour. It’s hard to believe any team would be foolish enough to offer a multi year deal. But if true, it would seem like a pretty extreme case of tampering. I know a little bit of tampering here and there happens all the time, but straight up giving a verbal contract offer to a player under contract to another team when they are opening trying to negotiate an extension, would seem to me to be something that should be punished. It’s kind of different when the player and team already decided to part ways and are just waiting it out until July 1st, but to get in their ear during negotiations, that is pretty bad. This is why teams trade for player rights.

True. I’m sure at this point, it’s just business. Kylington was replaceable and he’s been replaced.
That said, I’d be a bit surprised if the Flames weren’t surprised/disappointed/frustrated when it was becoming apparent that Kylington wasn’t going to extend back in May or June.

Kylington had zero trade value at the start of the season because no one knew how he'd bounce back. And zero trade value as the season progressed because he was going to be a UFA.

Without intending to sound overly crass, but losing Kylington, along with the rest of the deadwood we've jettisoned?
Its probably going to be the best for the team in the long-run
Will it be the best for Kylington? I cant say.

They probably were but it does them no good to let it be known
I honestly think they are glad to move on from the player and not look like the "bad guy"

I believe they tested his trade value before the season started and didn't like what they saw. Remember, he was coming off a relatively poor season for him.

True. I could see this being the case.
Also, it doesn’t seem to be too much of a stretch to think they knew Bean was ready and willing, more than willing from the sounds of it, to play for the Flames.
Personally, I don’t have any issue with the way things played out. Best of luck to Kylington, hope whatever turmoil he was dealing with is in the past and go flames go.

Keep in mind, it wasn't known that Bean would be available until the day before free agency when Columbus chose not to give him a qualifying offer.
Granted, I don't know if that sort of thing is known by the player and other teams ahead of time or if they find out when everyone else does.
