Forgive me as I don't follow soccer, but where does this tournament rank in the soccer world? Also, I assume only European countries are allowed to play in it? Do countries have to qualify to be in it? How often does it happen?

1) it's the second biggest/most important national tournament, only behind the World Cup
2) yes, you need to qualify. Teams play in qualification groups quite similar to the ones for the World Cup
3) there's a Euro tournament every 4 years, right between the World Cups

Yup. Thats pretty accurate. It'd be interesting to see the stats in terms of 'watchers' but the Euro Cup? I'd bet its minimum in the Top 10 world-wide.

In terms of importance, for sure #2. Viewers probably aren't quite as high because it's euro-centric, don't get the huge populations in the world from Asia or Africa.

1. World Cup
2. Copa America (especially now that it is merging with the Concacaf gold cup)
3. AFC Asian Cup
4. Africa Cup of Nations

I would argue that Euro is better in quality of competition than the WC. Other than 2, 3 nations from Conmebol, no one else is a serious participant.
