Speaking of of potential new managers what about Nagelsmann?

All this focus on England's disaster and everyone seems to have forgotten the lols and disaster that was the Germans becoming the first Euro host nation that couldn't make it past the quarters.

They must be thrilled with with the job he's doing.

Nagelsman is in the job as long as he wants it. He has made the country excited about the team and everyone realizes that losing to Spain in extra time in the quarterfinals is not a failed tournament

Germany had such low expectations for many Germans that making it out of the group was such a relief

If you flip England and Germany's path to the final then Germany is in the final and England is out in the quarters.

Losing to Spain is not a disaster at all.

The bracket is a bit of a mess when they do the weird second and third place thing. Just expand to 32 teams and 8 groups

sure but no matter the format, your 8 groups winners are supposed to meet in the quarterfinals. Which ones meet is a random draw. England and Spain were both group winners destined to meet once they were put in Group B and C.

In the last world cup 7 of the 8 group winners made the quarterfinals, the only exception was Japan who lost to Croatia. Remember Spain let Japan win Group E in order to face Morocco.

The quarterfinals were

Netherland (A1) vs Argentina (C1)
England (B1) vs France (D1)
Croatia (F2) vs Brazil (G1)
Morocco (F1) vs Portugal (H1)

Sure but that's generally not the case I'd guess if you looked back. In the end you have to beat at least a couple good teams to win, but I think with the way the groups work that having the 3rd place team rule is stupid.

I will always think that. It's going to be stupid in the 48 team world cup too where 8 of 12 third place teams are going to make it into a round of 32 and some 3rd place team is going to ####bag their way to a win over a better top seed team.

It kind of depends.. is a 3rd placed team in the Euros a bad team? The Euros are pretty even top to bottom.

In the upcoming World Cup, is a 3rd placed UEFA or Conmebol team a bad team? Non-UEFA and non-Conmebol teams really struggle. You can count on 1 hand how many of them have won a knockout game since 1990.

Cameroon 1990
USA 2002
Ghana 2010
Costa Rica 2014
Morocco 2022

*Korea doesn't count, they cheated in 2002. And they were at home.

*Japan has qualified for every world cup since 1998, never won a knockout game.

The 3rd place teams in this Euro were Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Netherlands, Slovakia, Georgia

4 of them you'd be shocked if they won a knockout round game. Its less balanced now that they started to give some sports to lower level teams.

And one of the best 3rd place teams from that list (Croatia) didn't get the playoff spot because they were in probably the toughest group of the tournament and were punished for it.

Which is the problem with the 3rd place seeding and how it works...it rewards teams in easier groups and punishes teams in harder groups.
