From the behind the net camera I can see why they make the call they did...even though I don't agree with it.

I repeat my wish that there is no such thing as offside once the ball is already in the box...but then you'd probably need to have a goalie interference type of rule.

The Dutch Xavi just stood there doing nothing, how could he be offside? Interference?

I can see both sides of the argument...

Dutch side: the ball was unsavable and Maignan isn't making the save even if Xavi isn't standing there.

French side: Xavi is clearly in the way of Maignan and directly in the path he would would have had to take to dive and save the ball.

Quote:
In situations where:

a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12
By the word of the law you could argue he impacted Maignan's ability to challenge for the ball.

If Maignan had tried to dive and clashed into Xavi's legs the call would have probably been clear...but I'm not sure him not diving actually prevents it being offside.

That was a brutal call.

The player impeded the goalie? He didnt even go for it. That was unsavable.

That was a good goal.

Shout out to the English refs ensuring that rep as the worst in the world remains intact.

I think the behind the net camera makes it look worse as it shows how Maignon made zero effort for it.

That was my issue too. Maignon was beaten. Player or no player he didn't even try. Thats nonsense. He was beaten.

Ya if the GK moves towards the ball then the call makes sense, but he is rooted in place.

Deschamps is just French for Southgate. Simply disappointing, given the talent available.

It's a shame the ref ####ed this up. Goal should have stood qnd the Netherlands would have deserved this.

Yes he was beaten but if out of the corner of his eye he sees the attacker (who is offside) and for that split second he choose to not dive then the player impacted play. It sucks to see but it is an offside offense

The standard for interference is actually quite low at times too.

I've seen some unstoppable shots get called back because a player is blocking the goalies vision from an offside position...and you could argue this is probably actually more interference.

Sucks but I don't think "unstoppable goal" is actually considered in these decisions...I can't find it in the rule anywhere.

It is not a consideration at all in offside decisions. Would be another "subjective" call that nobody really wants.

But in this one he isn’t blocking vision, and he isn’t blocking movement, because there is no movement.

far from being sober, but here goes.

good win for our team today. There were some phases during which Poland was able to cause some problems, but over 90 minutes, I'd say it was a deserved victory for us. Gernot Trauner probably the unlikeliest of scorers of our first goal during these Euros, but good on him! Hopefully his injury isn't too bad. Rangnick with some solid changes in the second half, highlighted by Alexander Prass and his wonderful pass to set up the second goal. All in all, not bad. Beating Poland was always key to get out of this group, so I'm glad they were able to pull it off. Looking forward to the match against the Netherlands now ... hard to predict, but I think there's a chance.

As for the France-Netherlands game, I once again came away unimpressed with Deschamps. Just like Southgate, it's more of a case of a team doing well in spite of the manager, not because of him. He's got world class talent at all positions, and that's the best he can do? Grim. The Netherlands have looked better at this tournament than I had expected, and I would have loved their goal to stand. Just another one of those calls in modern football that I just don't understand, but it is what it is, I guess.
