This is what I would do:

Pacific: Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, LA, San Jose, Anaheim, Winnipeg
Central: Phoenix, Colorado, Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, St Louis, Nashville, Minnesota

I'd prefer Denver as an division rival instead of Winnipeg, but that's of course now what the Avs would want. They'd love an All American division.

Swap Winnipeg and Vegas, Winnipeg gets screwed on travel plus the rivalries between Vegas and the two LA teams will be awesome in a few years

I suspect the Canadian fans are among the biggest out of town tickets for Vegas going forward. So probably Pacific for Vegas (sorry Winnipeg).

Two Conferences of 16 teams. Two Divisions of 8 teams in each Conference. Two Groups of 4 teams in each Division...

WESTERN CONFERENCE

PACIFIC DIVISION

PAC NORTH GROUP
  • Calgary
  • Edmonton
  • Seattle
  • Vancouver
PAC SOUTH GROUP
  • Anaheim
  • Los Angeles
  • San Jose
  • Vegas

CENTRAL DIVISION

CEN NORTH GROUP
  • Chicago
  • Minnesota
  • St Louis
  • Winnipeg
CEN SOUTH GROUP
  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Dallas
  • Nashville

EASTERN CONFERENCE

GREAT LAKES DIVISION

GLA NORTH GROUP
  • Buffalo
  • Montreal
  • Ottawa
  • Toronto
GLA SOUTH GROUP
  • Columbus
  • Detroit
  • Philadelphia
  • Pittsburgh

ATLANTIC DIVISION

ATL NORTH GROUP
  • Boston
  • New Jersey
  • NY Islanders
  • NY Rangers
ATL SOUTH GROUP
  • Carolina
  • Florida
  • Tampa Bay
  • Washington

For scheduling, you play:
  • 1 Home / 1 Away vs all teams outside your own Division (2 x 24 = 48)
  • 2 Home / 2 Away vs the other Group in your own Division (4 x 4 = 16)
  • 3 Home / 3 Away vs your own Group (6 x 3 = 18)

48 + 16 + 18 = 82 game season

Playoffs:
  • 24 of 32 teams make the playoffs
  • Winner of each Group gets a bye to the second round
  • 2nd & 3rd place teams in each Group play a Best-of-5 first round series
  • Winner of first round series plays the Group winner in the second round
  • Group series winners within each Division play in the third round
  • Division series winners within each Conference play in the fourth round
  • Conference series winners play in the Stanley Cup Final

I think, whether we like it or not, playoff expansion is coming. 24 of 32 is basically the same percentage of teams qualifying as when 16 of 21 teams made it.

I think the 4 team groups is a bad idea. There is just to high of probability that there are 4 bad teams in a division or one good team and three terrible teams.

The New England Partriots had one year where other teams were competent in the AFC East and in the NFC an 8-8 team and an 7-8-1 team got in over much better teams.

I don't mind the concept of 3/4 teams making the playoffs but it should be done in 8 team pools. Top 2 get byes. I also wouldn't do best of 5 because that would be 10 days without hockey for the top 8 teams which is too many.

So 4 divisions, top 2 get byes, Then best of 3 with the better seed getting the choice of the first 2 or last 2 games. Series is played in 4 nights.

If you are Winnipeg, would you rather be in a division with other Western Canadian teams or be with more teams closer to your time zone?

Fans seem to want to be in the time zone. I'm in the minority and want to be in the Canadian division

I think it'll be Calgary and Edmonton to the central, Colorado to the Pacific. Sucks that we lose the Vancouver/Calgary rivalry, but we can build a new one against the Jets.
