I agree. A 4-5 year deal between 3.5 and 4 would be great!

Leaves enough to sign Iginla to a $2M/1yr deal

The entire Flames core is locked up and we don't have a cap hit over 7M.

Nah. Keep your powder dry and sign Kovalchuk next summer.

If Treliving trades Brouwer for a first round pick and Stajan for a second round pick, I will fly back to Calgary and kiss Treliving's hairy feet

Don't you mean you would have to give up a 1st to have someone take Brouwer right now?

Bennett will command $3.5 on a two year deal, leaving $3.5 to sign the rest.

I'll hope for an Iginla or Jagr signing, but I'm not holding my breath. I think the Flames may want some cap pad to work with, especially as training camp is in 8 weeks and need to see how things are working out.

Technically, a small sail on the foremast of a ship, distinctvely shaped/coloured to display one's nationality/affiliation. You could tell that from the "cut" of the jib.

The phrase "I like the cut of your jib" is an idiom - to like one's appearance/personality/demeanour

Back on topic - I like the signing, especially the 2 years. Gives the flames a long look at Lazar, and if he produces, on track to be a bargain for 2 years. Worst case, trade/bury and mark it up as a gamble lost.
The Bennett deal can now either be a long term deal buying 1-2 UFA years, or a bridge with room to add another forward.

Meh, it's fine. It's 4th line money for IMO a 4th line player. Pretty much risk free.

Mmmmm, no.

Bennett is only getting $3.5 m if he signs for four years. It would be amazing if he signed for three—which would likely then produce an AAV close to $3.0, but I think he will sign for only two years at around $2.2–2.5 m.

wow... that's another solid signing by BT!

I'll be really interested to see what Bennett gets signed for? originally i was saying 2x 2.75million...

but now maybe that is too high... honestly, if we got Bennett at 2x2.25, i'd be pretty stunned... thrilled, but stunned.

Is Lazar still RFA after the 2 years? I am assuming he is since he is still young.

Great value deal on Lazar and the onus is now on Curtis to prove his worth over the next two years.

Treliving is shaping up a lineup with reasonable depth and some cap space to boot.

I like it!

Lazar could be one of the more interesting players to watch this year. A break out from him would add a ton of depth to our team.

Just need a 3 year deal for Bennett and then we're set. 2 year deal could be very risky - Bennett, Tkachuk, Ferland, Lazar all due for extensions with no goalie signed and no other big contracts expiring in the same offseason could be trouble.

But Iginla will retire after he wins his cup with the Flames so that leaves his money available for Kovy
