[GDT] The 2020 Trade Deadline!!! No trades past 1:00 PM Mountain!

Welcome one, welcome all to one of the best days of the hockey season: the trade deadline! Today, we'll likely see a flurry of activity as teams do all they can to either stock up for the playoffs or sell for the draft. Or, if they're in the mushy middle, they can... do nothing. Exciting!

As a reminder, TDL coverage can be found on both Sportsnet and TSN starting very early in the morning (around 8 AM last I checked? someone please work to confirm) and going until around an hour after the 1:00 PM MT deadline!

One more note: yes, trades can be processed after the deadline! There is a common misconception that this is not the case but it happens almost every year! The only restriction on making trades after the deadline? The players involved cannot participate in the playoffs. Pretty big caveat. A player has to be on a team's reserve list or its roster at the deadline to be eligible to play in the big dance.

This is my fifth year making one of these GDTs and this time, I'm going to take a bit of a different approach. Instead of just making a list of the Top 50 available targets, I'm going to be looking at each team individually and assess their top trade targets and their needs!

Oh, but I'll still be creating a Top 50 list, because screw it.

The 23 man roster limit is lifted as of midnight on deadline day. From now until the end of the season, a team can have as many players on its active roster as it wants as long as the roster is cap compliant.

Any player who is on a team's reserve list at the deadline (3:00pm ET, 1:00pm MT) is eligible to play in the NHL playoffs.


Any player who was on a team's reserve list but not on the active roster at the trade deadline (such as a junior or college player, a player in the AHL, or an injured player) is still eligible to play in the NHL for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. These players (except injured players -- subject to some conditions) are also eligible to play in the AHL playoffs. Teams can only make a total of 4 recalls from the AHL between the trade deadline and the end of the regular season (players can be added from junior or college without counting against the recall limit -- but are still subject to the cap). Once the playoffs begin, a team can have up to a maximum of 3 players recalled from the AHL since the trade deadline on its roster at any one time until the AHL team's season has ended (they can have 4 recalled players if all players were recalled during the regular season). Once the AHL team is done playing, there is no limit on the number of "Black Aces" an NHL team can have during the playoffs.




This year, for the Flames, Valimaki presents an interesting case because he is on the Flames roster on LTIR. As such, I believe the following section of the CBA applies to his situation and he should be eligible for a loan to the AHL if he is cleared to play soon...

A Player may be Loaned (with the Player's consent) provided such Player (a) was on Recall and was determined to be disabled as of the Trade Deadline, (b) is determined to be fit to play prior to such Loan, and (c) was on the Active Roster for less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the period from the beginning of the Regular Season up to and including the date on which he was determined to be disabled.
