Icon41 SJ places Paul Martin on waivers

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Paul Martin has been placed on waivers and Montreal claims Logan Shaw from Anaheim on waivers

reported in the last few days that SJ was trying to trade Martin. 1 more season at a $4.86 million makes a trade and waiver claim hard.

Might be a reasonable Oiler pickup, but likely through an anchor-for-anchor trade rather than straight up waiver pickup. Have the space, certainly aren't going to splurge for a high priced player at the deadline.

Edmonton should probably look at this. They could probably flip Fayne and get a decent pick back just to take Martin. Both contracts are expiring this year.

Didn't know he sucks now, thought he had a decent year last year.
Just goes to show you how tough it is to stay in the league.

Wow, that one surprises me. I haven't watched him lately, but the last time I did I saw a pretty competent defensive defenseman, albeit a low-skilled one. He's probably a fit somewhere at least as a bottom pairing d-man.

Didn't he play with Burns almost all last year? Thought they made a good combo considering how slow Burns' start was this year.

Pretty good player...unusual a guy of his calibre is available for nothing other than the value of his contract.

He was hurt to start the year. Has only played 3 games and they were fairly recent. The injury gave someone else an opportunity and now Martin is available.

If a team can take the salary someone will pick him up. He's still got value on the ice.

yup, think he's been out with Injury for a while, and they are happy with their D as it is. Perhaps folks were reluctant to trade to him not knowing the risks of the recent injury.

Though, i suppose they could have just sent him on a conditioning stint in the minors to get him going and get other teams to see him play there.

Maybe there's more to this under the hood....

They do have Fayne finally coming off their cap, but you are right they need to move that salary to one of their other players that will be paid. They could always do another one of those trades to save cap space. Maybe a RNH for Brock Nelson?

I don't think anyone will claim Paul Martin, he is 79 years old now and he hasn't played professionally since 2006.

Man you gotta wonder how much longer San Jose can hold on for.

I keep waiting for them to drop off a cliff, but they just keep on being an above average team for the most part. Thought they were done a few years ago when they finally missed the playoffs, but then they came back and went to the Finals the next year.

Marleau gone now
Thornton is 38
Pavelski is 33
Burns is 32
Vlasic is 30

Even Couture is 28 now and likely has his best years nearly behind him

They keep on dropping good chunks of money on marginal UFA's like Ward, Boedker and the guy responsible for the thread Martin.

Yet still in the playoff picture and always a threat.

Hopefully young guys like Hertl, Donskoi, Meier and Lebanc don't take the next step, or they'll never go away.

Seems to me Paul Martin (the hockey player) has now kicked the bucket, or fallen off his final cliff. It's what can happen when you get well into your 30s, 36 in his case.

Paul Martin cleared waivers

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Plan now would be for Paul Martin to play some AHL games so NHL teams can see him play....

Vlasic is 30. The pick we traded for Kipper is 30 years old. I don't like that at all.
