Washington Capitals @Capitals
Staying in Washington!
@CarlHagelin signs a four-year, $11 million contract extension with the Capitals.

they still have to re-sign Vrana and Burakovsky ... this pretty much guarantees that Connolly hits UFA.

Huh, well I didn't expect that. A 4 year deal for Hagelin surprises me, considering that he can't seem to stick with any one team for too long. Not a bad depth player and that AAV isn't too bad either. Still, 4 years for him seems like a lot.

Unusual to see 4 year contracts at this kind of AAV. These aren't the kind of guys that you usually get signed for long term.

I think he will not finish that contract with Washington, probably end up going to Seattle.

He certainly is likely to be exposed. But they might prefer a younger player as he will be 32 by then.

$2.75m seems like a lot for a one dimensional 25 point player, what's Sam Bennett worth now?

For someone with his speed he likely doesn’t decline as soon, hence the contract length

$2.75 per is a bargain to me for a veteran like Hagelin. Pretty much a dependable roster player who is rarely scratched (last year shows less games played, not sure if he was injured) and a guy on the right side of the +/- stat the majority of his career (yeah, I know, plus/minus...). Deal takes him to 34 and I'd wager he maintains a decent level of play until then with a slight drop off in his last year it anything at all.

Hoping Austin Czarnik compares to him as a smaller, speedy depth player

That is a lot of hope. I hope Czarnik manages to stay I the NHL at this point.

Isn't Czarnik signed for like 1yr/1.75m? With 18 points in 54 games last season as a 27 year old he could have some trade value if Tre wanted to go that route instead, he was highly coveted when we acquired him last year.
But saying that, I hope we see him at training camp. He's a nice depth option to have at the very least and on an affordable contract. Plus he's essentially playing for his next contract next season, some guys thrive with that pressure.

Czarnik was given every opportunity to be successful last year and more often than that, looked ineffective IMO.
If he was a UFA right now, he’d get a 2 way deal and need to compete for a spot on an NHL roster. Best case.
I’m thinking it’s unlikely he improves much year over year so we are looking at roster depth only at this point.

Yeah fair enough, I'm not saying he's a world beater but I just think he's got more to give than we saw this season. Jankowski probably wouldn't be his ideal C partner on paper but that's who he was saddled with for much of his shifts. Its also mid June and my memory of these players is probably warped lol but I agree he's a depth piece right now and hasn't proven to be anything more at this point
