I actually thought this said Flames sign Ryan Lambert.

This is much better news.

I thought it was Yvan Lambert, and figured "isn't he a bit old"?

Really? The next Bouma/Hathaway? He is 5 ft 9 inches tall at 190 lbs. He will get eaten alive by every teams fourth line. Waste of a contact.

Bahaha. Paul Byron can skate and has the ability to put the puck in the net at every level he has played. Ryan wasn't good enough or big enough for the OHL. Ryan didn't last long in US college hockey.

What kind of player is Ryan? Not big enough to replace Bouma or Hathway and isn't talented enough to replace Gaudreau or even Byron in Montreal.

I am still laughing hard over the Paul Byron comparison. Bahaha

The comparison is terrible, I agree, however the Flames need to keep rewarding players that put in grade A effort. This is a two way contract. At worst they have someone in the AHL banging bodies. Give the kid a chance to prove himself. That is all anyone wants at this level.

Lomberg didn't last in College because of an off ice incident not because of poor play. He decided to leave Maine altogether but in order to do that had to take a year off so he went back to the USHL for one season. Ryan was actually set to return to College with Miami but Treliving and the Flames offered him an AHL deal.

As for the OHL he was drafted by the Petes so that option was open to him. Maybe he wasn't big enough or strong enough but I fail to see how you can say that with such certainty. Peterborough thought enough about him to use a draft selection on him.

Now I have no idea what kind of NHL upside Lomberg has, it's probably limited at best.. but atleast get the facts straight about his career path and the routes that were open to him.

You do realize, don't you, that the second point makes nonsense of the first?

I really like this signing, Lomberg definitely earned it. Went to Penticton this past summer and he was one of my favourite players to watch. I was surprised that a no name like him caught my eye. There's just something entertaining about watching a guy who laid it on the line every single game and was clutch when he needed to be. His mouth never stopped chirping during, between and after each play. You could see that he got under the skin of every opposing player. Tkachuk and Lomberg definitely didn't make any friends in the rookie tournament.

My buddies and I were so impressed that after one of the games we chatted with Ryan Huska about Lomberg. He said that he's not only a good hockey player, but a great human being. Glad to hear that he got a contract and I hope he can make it to the show one day.

Bouma has actually looked like pre-injury Bouma the last few games. Best hockey he's played in a while.
I think he could be picked up by Las Vegas though.

It's pretty clear that tsquared has never seen or watched Lomberg play.

He doesn't have the skill of Byron, but he can skate, hit and fight. I think the best comparison is probably a Jordin Tootoo type of player.

Considering that he lost his hockey scholarship with the University of Maine (he was accused of assualting a man in an off-campus altercation but pled guilty to lesser charges) three years ago and was forced to return to the USHL, it is a good story of perseverance that he earned a NHL contract.
