Well, having a mayor thought well enough of give a talk in another country is pretty impressive, but I'm kinda with Gondek on this one...he should have at least mentioned to her that he was going to be out of town for 36 hours.

Mentioning it would've been nice, giving the deputy major a heads up I suppose. Beyond that the outrage is childish. The Stampede continues on without the major, does he have to be here each morning to turn on the power?

Unless he's chartering a private flight his plane was going with out without him in the seat.

"putz" is such an over reaction.

I think he should have told her, but it doesn't look good on her either making these comments.

You're right...why should the guy in charge of running the city inform those that need to do his duties if he is gone? I guess he is too important to himself to do so.

Not just a putz, but an arrogant and elitist one.

So, the Mayor leaves for a day and a half for a conference with all expenses paid by the conference, doesn’t inform the Deputy Mayor because he’s working remotely and had nothing planned that needed to be covered, and he’s an arrogant elitist.

Gondek fields a request for an optional speaking engagement on Kid’s Day, and makes it work, but complains to the media because she had to move a meeting with her grandma (not part of her job), hit a meeting two hours later, cart her teenager around (not part of her job), do a little bit of work, and then go to the rodeo at 1:30? And she’s the victim here?

Our Mayor was actually working and was on top of his obligations. Do we pay councillors to work for a couple hours and hang out with their family and go to the rodeo on a Wednesday? Real tough day for her.

Only socialists who spend too much money would make a transgression like this! Just more careless spending at Silly Hall! The purple king has got to go!

Of all the Mayor's gaffes, this has to be at threat level "who gives an F".

Personally I really like Gondek, she's got good chops and I'd support her she if made a run for the big chair one day.. but how vague is this?

I'm actually laughing at transplant99's overreaction. More angry words!

Lol at Sean Chu's twitter:

"Where’s the priority? If you were the Mayor, would you bug out during the most important time #CalgaryStampede to showcase #calgary? Nenshi went to Europe again. Guess saving the world is more important than saving #yyc #yyccc . Most of us, including Deputy Mayor, weren’t told."

Actually yeah that does seem reasonable if that's how you want to frame it Chu.

But Nenshi's a pompous ass, all he had to do was let people know he would be gone like any reasonable person would do.

It seems like some councillors who don’t like Nenshi are taking advantage of the reports of his declining support to “add fuel to the fire”. I have seen tweets from a number of them “complaining” in the last little while.

Easily could be, especially with regards to Sean Chu. Could also be that one of the reason his support is declining is his actions which have also forced his colleagues to complain about.

Total lack of foresight on Nenshi's part. the issue isn't for every day things, but what happens if there were a major emergency, something where "working remotely" does no good? What if there were a mass shooting or a bombing at the stampede? Response time is critical. The confusion of not knowing who's in charge can make all the difference in the world. At the very least, he should have notified the deputy mayor. It's not like this would have just popped up either, he surely had plenty of notice. Seriously, such a small, simple thing, why wouldn't he let council and his deputy mayor know? So stupid on his part.

At the end of the day, it just shows that Nenshi is just not a great communicator with what seems like a fractured council.

It takes 30 seconds to pick up the phone or send a text say "Hey man . . . going out of town LOL hearty face thumbs up emoji. You're in charge.

You'd think there would be a I don't know, a shared calendar or something so a month in advance that conference trip would be in there. I very much doubt that they called Nenshi the day before to fly there.

Its sloppy but that's about it.

At the same time, I'm sure that most Calgarians wish that they could leave town during Stampede.

Haha, how is this on Nenshi? I’m sure he has a staff, I’m sure there are processes to alert the deputy mayor in case of an absence. Either some admin didn’t do her job, or the councillor missed an email.

I’ve seen petty outrage, but this is next level.

I'm not outraged, I don't really care.

But shouldn't a mayor, a leader, be communicating better? And looking after the details better?

City Council would probably work better if he went on the road for the rest of his term.

He should have let them know for sure, but let's not pretend that Nenshi would be doing a damned thing outside of tweeting about a catastrophe.

It's not like we need RoboNenshi to keep our streets safe.

I think it's a little early to point fingers. Has Nenshi commented? Maybe it's just a case of someone along the line didn't do their job. Either way, this is petty outrage.
