Updating iPhone 3GS to Software 3.2

As mentioned in the iPhone Apps thread, I went to install an App (VLC Player) and it told me I had to have software version 3.2. I currently have 3.1.

Can anybody tell me how I can do this without going to Software version 4? Of course I tried to update through iTunes, and the only option it gives it to update all the way to version 4.

I don't want version 4. I know people who upgraded and say their phone is slower to respond now. I just want VLC Player to work so I can watch .avi files.

On a 3GS if you wish to upgrade you HAVE to go to 4.1. 4.2 is out this week and is snappier then 4.1, so you should be good to upgrade at that point.
