Minnesota signs Jared Spurgeon to 7 year deal - $7.575 mill AAV
https://www.nhl.com/wild/news/jared-...19/c-309131756
Quote:
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a seven-year, $53,025,000 million contract extension ($7,575,000 million average annual value) that goes through the 2026-27 season.
Spurgeon, 29, set career highs in goals (14), assists (29), points (43) and games played (82) during the 2018-19 season. The 5-foot-9, 166-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta also set career highs in shots on goal (152) and hits (91) and tied his career high with 20 penalty minutes (PIM) last season. He led the team in blocked shots (145), ranked second in TOI/game at 24:09 (17th in the NHL) and fifth in goals, assists, points, shots on goal and hits. His 14 goals ranked T-3rd in franchise history by a defenseman in a season.

Signed till he is 36? That is a lot of dough for a guy at the brink of entering his 30s. He has been a solid player for them so far, though.

I am starting to realize it’s me that is out of touch with the market. So many contracts are just bonkers to me.

I'm not sure he warrants this term. Career season at 29 years old means he may have a few more seasons at around 40 points but it's just a lot of money and term for a guy like this. As said above maybe we are just out of touch with what teams are considering prudent.

I like Spurgeon but isn't he a #2D? That seems outrageous.

Their top 3 D are making 21 million? Seems like a bad idea.

Is this the sort of contract Brodie will be looking to sign for next year?
That looks like a bad deal.

Spurgeon is better than Brodie. Much more reliable in his own zone as well.

Seems like a lot for Spurgeon. He's a Jake Gardiner type, probably better in his own zone, but 3 million dollars a year better?

This is good show those RFA’s there are still massive paydays to come after a 7-8 year deal they sign today.

AAV seems right but term is a bit questionabl give his age. But on second thought high end defensemen tend to play well into their 30s.

Well, you certainly can't call him underrated anymore.

Yeah its players like Spugeon who should see the gap between their salary and the top players increase as these guys take higher cap %. Maybe on a 3 year deal...but 7...no way.

Dom Luszczyszyn said in his Wild preview that his model ranks Spurgeon as a top 10 defenseman in the league (while acknowledging that outside the analytics community most would think this crazy). The WAR model also is high on him, ranking him 11th best last year and 4th over a three year period.
That said, this still seems high to me. But lots of people thought the Gio contract was too high for a guy his age, but it's been a slam dunk bargain so far, and even if Gio drops off massively from here, it will still be a big net positive contract. Spurgeon could end up the same.

In 5 years, the wild will be paying 28.5 million of their salary (about 33%) to:
40 year old parise
39 year old suter
37 year old Zuc
And 34 year old spurg
All have no trade clause
I think this tweet says it all.

About 2M a season too rich for the term. Minny is going to be mediocre for a long time.
