Slovakia’s PM shot in assassination attempt

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was in a life-threatening condition in hospital Wednesday after he was shot multiple times in an assassination attempt.
A statement posted on Fico’s official Facebook page and his party’s website called the attack “an asassination attempt.”
“He was shot multiple times and is currently in a life-threatening condition. The next few hours will be decisive,” according to the statement.

Apparently he is a pro-Russia anti-Ukraine guy.

Pretty crazy. I haven't read that he's pro-Russian, but I do understand he wants to take Slovakia away from the NATO, EU, US-led western alliance for sure.

He is one of those politicians that speaks out both sides of his mouth. When Russia annexed Crimea, he condemned it as illegal, but then he said once it was done, it would be more harmful to reverse it. I suspect he has a secret bank account somewhere with Russian money in it.

That's not the same as NATO. The U.S. acts unilaterally most of the time. Besides, Slovakia isn't powerful and has nothing the U.S. needs.
Most of the time when stuff like this happens, it's an internal matter and politics in Slovakia are very heated at the moment. If there is a conspiracy, it's likely homegrown. Chances are, someone just hated him and wanted to kill him and didn't have a master plan.
When all is said and done, I doubt this leads to any change in Slovakia's policies. It's a parliamentary democracy and the party in place still sets the agenda. If anything, this will just give them cause to tighten their grip. Of note is that their parliament is currently in the process of passing a controversial law for the state to have more control over the press and media.

Sorry, is your ask to show you examples of when the US covertly took out a soverign country's ruling government and inserted their own western-friendly people in its place? The Monroe Doctrine is a good place to start.

No I think their ask was specifically for an example that was an ally or a nato ally. I get where you’re trying to go with this but that does make a difference.
Or it was indeed NATO assassins who botched the hit. This I believe.

Seems like a bold move to risk World War 3 for having your fingerprints on the assassination of a world leader who’s not even directly involved in this conflict when they could just keep writing cheques.
