Islanders sign Lehner (1yr, $1.5mil)
James Mirtle @mirtle
Sounds like Islanders close on Robin Lehner.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Seems like Lou's kind of guy. Will he shave?
A little disappointed as I thought he'd be a good stop gap here. I may have been the only one.

Which like...good for them, but also - good luck beating out Vancouver.
...unless of course Vancouver finishes last and then loses the lottery.

Was hoping for him here, too. Hard to see him reaching whatever his potential might be on another bad and now Tavarless team.

I think this is quite likely. The Canucks are realistically a team that could have no +60-point players, and only two over 50. They also have a proud history of being terrible and losing the draft lottery.

Not that I’m disagreeing with the general idea of the Canucks being brutal, but I’m curious how many points you think Brock Boeser will put up next year. 55 points in 62 games as a rookie with very little talent to work with. He was very impressive in my (limited) viewings.

He has even less talent to work with this year. The Canucks are destined for dead last.

But now every team's game plan is shut down Boeser going into the season.
Last year it was shut down the Sedins. Sedins are gone, every team can simply stack their defense to stop the rather pitiful top line of Boeser, Baertschi and Horvat.
He's great and he'll get a lot of PP time and offensive opportunities as the only offensive threat but coming back from injury, no depth, and 0 support. Boeser could be in for a heck of a sophomore season jinx.
Same reasoning applies to Barzal without Tavares, in my opinion. Both great players on what look like terrible teams now.

Boesser is a fine player. He got a tonne of powerplay time last year with the Sedins where he scored half of his points. That won't happen this year, and I think his production will take a hit.

Was it though? The Sedins were not the primary scoring threat last year, Boeser and Horvat were. Which isn't to say he won't suffer a sophomore slump of course. Either way, even if you finish last, there's an 80% chance you lose the draft lottery anyway. So yes, that would probably happen.
Also, I watched a lot of Islanders hockey last season, and Barzal was, in many games, their best player. Granted, as you say, he'll be keyed on more now, but he's just so damned good. If they could somehow manage to swing a Karlsson deal, they'd be in decent shape. Of course, they still need to re-sign Calvin De Haan, which is looking less and less likely.

Boeser scored 11 of his 22 ES points while playing with Horvat, and he scored 10 goals and 23 points on the powerplay. That powerplay will be dramatically worse this season without the Sedins (9G, 40pts), and I think both Horvat and Boeser will see dips in their scoring totals as a result.

Don't count out the Oilers. If McDavid or Talbot go down for a long stretch of time they will be a lottery team. That's all it will take.

Lehner's crazy. If there's anyone who might get into a fist-fight with Lou over facial hair, it's him.

I thought Lehner would be good insurance for Smith.

If you look at it from Lehner's perspective, he'd be coming here to be a backup. Whereas, he's probably penciled in as game 1 starter for the Islanders.
