Neal's potential contract scares me a lot, but he would fill out the roster nicely in the top 6. Maybe Treliving is willing to overpay on a shorter 3 year deal. Maybe a $7.5-8.0/yr deal could fit short term. They can buy out Brouwer next season and trade Stone to make room.

I just don't see how a 45 point forward is an $8 million player.

Next year looks like it might be a bit tight with the cap. Smith's contract is coming off the books (plus about $900k of buyout money for Bouma and Murphy) but will need to be replaced and otherwise it is just Tkachuk, Bennett and jankowski... all of whom are looking at raises. However, the next year Brouwer and Frolik come off the books along with Hamonic, Brodie and Stone. By then some young guys should have established themselves.

Golfed Copperpoint today and saw Mike Commodore on the range if that means anything.

Are you suggesting it does mean something in regards to a possible James Neal signing? I mean, it confirms Commodore golfs I guess. If someone can spin that into evidence the rumour is more likely, I’d love to hear it!

Not going to lie, in my opinion James Neal is better than Pat Maroon.

Love to have Neal here, afraid of the contract that will be required to make it happen.

I was also at Copper Point today and I read something about Neal and the Flames, if that solidifies things a bit.

Not worried about an "overpay" improve the team on the ice. Buyout Brouwer/trade guys next season when space is needed.

Some of you want the owners to pocket an extra 5-10M it seems.

So the last time Neal had a ppg season was 5 years ago on a stacked penguins team. I’m usually quite optimistic about Flames moves but this is one that I don’t want happening unless it’s 3 years or less.

It's more about having to lose good players later because there's no salary cap room

Agree. As long as there is room for re-signing core players ie Tkachuk. I’m less worried about term too. Over the next few years we will have an expansion draft and quite likely a lockout. Both will present opportunities to move a contract like this if necessary. Not to mention trades and regular buyouts down the road.

Neal was a big part of the leadership in Vegas and an impact forward. Great fit.

If we sign a legitimate top 6 guy we all of a sudden have 4 lines that can score. When was the last time that happened?

Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Czarnik
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Ryan - Foo
Brouwer/Lazar

I’d do that deal... was he saying Calgary? Or just in general that’s what he’s looking for?

4 years at 5.75 would be absolutely ideal!

Tkachuk - Bennett - Neal — could you imagine a pest line like this ?

CGY and James Neal were working late into the night on a five year deal. Assuming it got done — it was headed in that direction but nothing official as of yet — it will be an AAV of around $5.75M.

5 x 5.75 is much better then expected - 1 year longer than if prefer but the AAV is just right!

What a forward group we have now!!
