I’ll admit I would have liked to see him on the Flames. Imagine what would have happened to the CP servers if we’d paid a first for him and then signed that contract. (Which I think is too steep a price personally).

It was a second rounder anyway, so this is just a 31 spot move-up in the draft (next year) for Buffalo. So, it's not quite as steep as giving up their first rounder straight-up.
If Wilson thinks that Kane is the difference between another top-10 finish and fighting for a wild card spot, then it's not even a 31 spot move and he doesn't have to worry about any July 1 bidding wars.

That’s a huge contract, way more than I would be comfortable giving.

Different positions but it makes the Backlund contract look pretty good as he's a much more useful player.

I can't imagine that Kane will finish that contract in SJ. He played well for 25 games for them, but his history for two teams is wearing out his welcome and underperforming.

$7 million is a lot to pay for a guy who scores 40 points most seasons...
Like imagine if we had paid Frolik $7 million?

I can't wait to see Kane go back to his usual form and post 50 points in a good season while draining 7 million in cap space.

I think Kane will surprise and be be a 25 goal 60 pint guy for 3-5 years. Last 2 years may be bad. But the cap will be high and it will be less painful.

I’m a Kane fan and really wanted him in Calgary, but that contract is not very good. I would have walked at that price.

I want no part of this contract. If history is any indication he will be decent next year then go back to sleep for several years. By the time his next contract is due he might be too old to turn it on again for another payday.

I think most of us would be screaming bloody murder if the Flames gave up a 1st rounder and a 7 year contract for Kane, who has never lasted anywhere more than 4 years, has a career average of 35 points per season, who has a reputation for wearing out his welcome in the dressing room, and who will turn 34 before the final year of the contract starts.
I'd be happy to save the cap space for a certain highly-sought-after UFA centre. Hopefully this means that SJ is now less of a contender for Tavares' services.

I don't know, it makes me a little nervous that Kane could terrorize the Flames for 7 years. If he puts in the effort, that's a tough hombre to play against. He's got all he needs physically (size, speed, and skill) to have a long, successful NHL career.

Yes, it'll be a huge surprise if he can get 60 points. He has played over 70 games twice, get over 55 points once, that's when he scored 30 goals and 27 assists and that's 6 years ago. For him to score 60 points with 25 goals, he'll have to have 35 assists, the most assists he has in his career was 27.

I am still skeptical that Kane gets 49 million over 7 years.
Has someone come out and given greater confirmation since the original report?

I’m quite glad Flames didn’t sign him to this deal. That said, him signing such a big contract with the Sharks only hurts the Flames and makes it harder to fill their RW needs.

Remember when Jarome Iginla was worth $7M? That was for 80-90 Points.

this is an atrocious deal and SJ will regret it. This is totally the type of guy that will shut it down knowing that he doesn't have to work anymore.

The cap was also less than half of what next year's cap will likely be.

Perfectly reasonable contract.
I'm willing to give Kane a pass on his supposed attitude problems. People grow up and mature. People may not get along with specific individuals. His current teammates/coach have all praised him. Even if he has an attitude, so what if he produces on the ice. Many NFL/NBA players have huge egos but are superstars on the field.
I'm also skeptical of injury history. If a running back has a history of groin or foot injuries, that is a red flag. Kane's injuries seem to be random. If anything, his value is underrated since people will discount him due to low counting totals. Moreover, he was likely playing hurt for durations of his games, further depressing his totals. A fully healthy Kane should project much higher than his historics.
Guy has size, toughness, goal scoring touch, and takes a regular shift on the PK. Nothing outrageous about this contract at all.
