I keep looking at the Oilers cap situation and the best part about this is this will basically be the same team next year. Which means that they are gonna be on the outside looking in come playoffs again. I don't see them having the 2nd best PP in 40 years again, and Smith & Koskinen both had games playing above their heads this year. I would not be surprised to see them finish 5th or 6th in the Pacific.

They will have 9.5-9.6 in cap after bonus overages.

They need a competent backup, or better yet a 1B. Go with 2.5 million for the goalie. 7.0 million remaining.

They only have 11 forwards signed. Does Holland take the embarrassment and let Anthansiou walk, basically giving away Gagner and 2 2nd round picks for nothing? I don't think so, so even keep him at the same salary, 3.0. Now add a 13th forward at league minimum of $700k. $3.3 million remaining.

They only have 5 D signed, and precious Ethan Bear needs a new contract. Give him the Darnell Nurse bridge of $3.2 per. $100k left and only 6 D on the roster.

Have fun with that Holland!

I think that the Oilers regular season success this year is largely not sustainable. They won based on a historic level power play and penalty killing while playing pretty poor 5v5 hockey. If they can't sustain that power play, its simple they either learn to defend or they die on the vine next season.

I was amazed at their results this year, its such a poorly constructed team with a poor bottom 6, subpar blueline and meh goaltending.

I the worlds of Arnold kinda sorta "They won't be back"

Nah.
This has guaranteed they're everyone's punching bag until at least December with no chance to do anything about it.
This gift will still be pleasing us at Christmas.

Have to chuckle at this one ...

Oilers Deserved Better Fate

He's not wrong.

The Oilers had some of the best shot metrics and expected goal splits of any of the teams in the bubbles.

But all season they were the opposite ... shooting metrics in the 25-27 rank, xGF% in the 20s, and a PDO in the top five.

So the correction was severe and took them out of the playoffs in their own bubble.

Fails to mention the unsustainable shooting percentage for McAvi. Does he really think he could maintain 46% shooting?

Yes the Oilers goalies suck. Yes their D is atrocious. Neither of those 2 things are a surprise. It does seem that he is fine with the forwards selling out to get the points without caring about their own zone though. The Oilers scored enough to win that series if they had even average team defence. They don’t, and they didn’t in the regular season either. They vastly overachieved in the regular season relying heavily on their PP. That’s unlikely to reoccur, and articles like this will just reinforce that their “stars” need to score more, not that they need to address fundamental flaws in how they play the game.

Keep ‘em coming Edmonton media. Don’t change a thing.

Ouch.
Oilers management, time and again:

That article is just disgusting. What kind of journalist or publication cheerleads that much. Gross.

Assistant Captain and emerging superstar/whipping boy Darnell Nurse gets his big raise to $5.6M as well! A little over $1M more than Rasmus Andersson!

Ouch.
How dare you dismiss the value that occurred after these.

Spooner was traded for former superstar Sam Gagner as a favour to the Oilers, who proceeded to rejuvenate his career of sorts.

The Oilers than upped that value by trading Sam Gagner and two 2nd round pick for Ryan Kuffner and Andreas Athanasiou

Both Kuffner and Athanasiou would propel the Oilers to play hockey well past the month of June, the first Oiier team to ever do it in 15 years.

Athanasiou went on to get 2 points in 9 games for the Oiler machine, and had ...0 points and was a -2 in the qualifiers where the Oilers scored 15 goals.

Kuffner had 11 points in the AHL.

So the trade value was

Eberle -> Strome -> Spooner -> Gagner -> Athanasiou / Kuffner and somehow the Oilers still lost two 2nd rounders in that chain of value just because Oilers

*(thanks for the correction on how many 2nd rounders Ken Holland decided to send to their best buds in Detroit)

Is it possible that Sekera is mad at Edmonton for buying him out and is secretly trying to help the Flames or is he just that bad?

Dube made a great move on his second goal but it really didn't look like Sekera tried all that hard to stop him. Once Dube blew by him he haphazardly poked with his stick. Sekera essentially deserved an assist on Andersson's goal.

I suppose I'm answering my own question. You've got to be especially bad for the Oil to buy out a defenceman!

Is it? Holland left a horrible mess in Detroit. He's not what his reputation claims him to be.

Bringing him on as GM is a pure Oiler move.

Out of touch and out of time. Holland’s strength during the cap years in Detroit was getting stars to take less and set an internal cap structure to build collective team strength. Lidstrom, Hossa, etc.

He was the guy they needed to negotiate Connor & Leon’s contract.

Now he’s being exploited for his inability to direct money where it’s needed. Kassian’s contract is a perfect example.
