If Edmonton gives us their 3rd rounder this year, doesn't it go to Chicago anyway in the Gus trade?
I believe we are to send them a 2020 3rd in that deal, and it has to be the higher pick.

In the trade thread, a lot of people are hung up on making a move that nets a top 10 pick (and that's fine too), but there are multiple teams sitting on multiple second rounders. Sneaking in on a deal that bags a few of those might pay big dividends this year, as the shortened season put a lot of pressure on scouts to be at the top of their game. And I like the Flames scouting staff.

Totally valid- the draft seems like it has a very stable top 13-ish and then it becomes wild, with various rankings having some players between 15 and 60. Martin Chromiak is a good example of this, as is Jan Mysak, who have variably been rated mid first round to end of second.
There will be plenty of gems to mine in the second IMO.

What's everyone's take on Foerster?
I see he's ranked 29th on Bob's "list" which is usually ranked on average from his take after talking to people around the league, but Button has him at 15th so maybe the Flames Button also has him ranked high?

I personally prefer Tristen Robins to Foerster in the same vein of player.

Yeah Robins is nice too. Might be able to get him with the 2nd rounder.

So here are the conditions on the 3rd rounder that goes to Chicago for Gustavsson:
https://www.capfriendly.com/draft/2020?pick=76
Quote:
*Conditions: Chicago will receive the higher (or better) of the Calgary or Edmonton 2020 3rd round pick (on the requirement that Edmonton's pick meets its conditions and becomes the property of Calgary. The Edmonton pick is a conditional pick that Calgary does not yet own)
|
If that is true, it's probably going to make it harder for Holland to give away. I doubt he wants the Hawks using their 3rd rounder at the draft this year.
I am assuming that would mean that Chicago would get the pick next year and we wouldn't have to give them a 2020 3rd (or maybe they get to choose), but it doesn't seem clear to me.

No, if the Oilers hold onto the pick this year, Chicago will get the Flames 3rd rounder this year, the same as they would have received if the Flames got nothing for Neal.

Yes, but if they don't then we have to give our 3rd this year to Chicago.
So I guess the question is would we rather have our 3rd this year and next year, or no 3rd at all this year and both Edmonton's 3rd and our 3rd next year.

Alright, Q & A time.
If a 20 year old CHL player doesn't get drafted, does he become a UFA?

In that case, I would keep an eye on Oliver Okuliar. He was passed over in 2018 and 2019.
In 2018, I recall some people predicted he would be a 2nd rounder. I don't know what happened last year, but I see him ranked again among 4th and 5th rounders. His age has probably dropped his ranking and likelihood of being drafted. He has decent CHL stats and played well in the WJC. As free prospect, I would certainly give him a shot.

He's a long shot. Not unlike other players ranked around where he is. Given his age, I would gamble that he goes undrafted again. If he does, it would be like having a free pick. If he doesn't, it's not a big deal.
I don't really know much about him, but I think it is rare for players undrafted to keep showing up in the rankings, so I am guessing others see some potential there.
I think the Flames did a similar thing when they signed Ryan Wilson (I think) right after the draft.

I don't consider Foerster and Robins to be very comparable-Robbins is 5'10, Foerster is 6'1".Foerster is closer to a power forward, where Robbins relies more on speed.

Robins has that Point vibe to me.
Maybe we can get Foerster in the 1st and Robins in the 2nd.

Yeah, he's a really good 200 ft player, works very hard, fights through traffic, not shy about contact, and skates well. Sounds like a young Point to me too.

30th. As it has always been the finalists always get the last 2 picks of the round. Unless there's some covid rules at play here.

Right now, they are in the 19th overall spot. That could change depending on the results of the playoffs.
The Conference finalists automatically get the last 4 spots in the draft order. The champion picks 31st, the loser of the Final picks 30th, the higher-ranked loser of the Conference Finals picks 29th, and the lower-ranked loser of the Conference Finals picks 28th.
For every one of Montreal, Chicago, or Arizona that makes the Conference Finals the Flames would move up one spot in the draft order if the Flames don't make the Conference Finals.
If the Flames lose the Conference Finals, they'd pick 28th unless Montreal also loses the Conference Finals, in which case, the Flames would pick 29th.
If the Flames lose the Stanley Cup Final, they'll pick 30th, and if they win the Cup, they'll pick 31st.
