Why would the Caps sign Laviolette when Geoff Ward was available?

Interesting he got a significant pay increase. Went from being paid $2.5 mil per year with the Preds to $4 mil per with the Caps.

Obviously, that was the hold-up for all of this. Once Ward was extended by the Flames, the Caps had to settle for Laviolette.

It's scary to think, Ward was chosen over Laviolette for Flames coach? You have to ask the question with the timing of both hires.

Laviolette was never going to come to Calgary when Washington at 4M a year was an option. Period.

Just because a coach is available doesn't mean he'll go to any team that wants him.

If there's any connection between the two announcements (which there likely isn't), it would most-likely be that Treliving reached out to Laviolette and was told that Laviolette's first choice was the Caps, but if Washington decided to go in a different direction, he'd be willing to listen to an offer from the Flames. Then, over the weekend, Laviolette let Treliving know he was not going to be available so Treliving finalized things with Ward.

However, the most-likely scenario is that the two announcements are unrelated and only happened on consecutive days because time is running out before the draft and free agency and teams want to get their coaching staffs finalized.

Most people have this backwards.

Once the amazing Flames were unavailable, Laviolette had to settle for the Caps

Laviolette would have come to Calgary if the Flames offered him something ridiculous like $10 million per season.
Of course, ownership would never do that.

For that reason, in combination with Laviolette not wanting to come to Calgary, he was never an option.

A guy like Laviolette only wants one thing at this point of his career....to win.

So does he come to Calgary (having never lived off the east coast of the US) for money and a chance to coach a Flames team that may be dealing away their most offensively talented forward and possibly more, or does he go to a team where the time zone doesnt change, there is less travel and has a team that sports Ovechkin....oh and won a Stanley cup just 2 years ago?

No brainer.

Yeah, I mean if there is a great coach still unemployed by the start of the next season I will be more annoyed but this doesn't bother me as there has too be two-way interest.

What makes an unhireable coach ‘great’?

Laviolette was the one head coach that Calgary never realistically had a shot of hiring. He pretty much stated it in an article that never living in Canada in any capacity and his family rooted in the US that it was going to be a big deal for them to cross the border. It really sounded like Canada would be strictly a last resort.

Unless said coach is holding out for Seattle. Usually an expansion team job is good for job security since the expectations are low (Gallant getting fired is an exception).
