His release on his wrist shot is so quick that I'd call many of the quick one touch passes to Mony in the slot from Gaudreau "one-timers". However a traditional one-timer slap shot, I can't recall one either.

Ward wants Bennett at centre.
If Bennett and Lindholm are at centre, I want the following lines for 2 two-way players on each line, 2 good skaters on each line and Monahan on his off wing for one timers.
Gaudreau - Backlund - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Lindholm - Monahan
Dube - Bennett - Leivo
Lucic - Ryan - Simon
I’ve posted that before and ppl haven’t liked it, but I think that lineup has a chance to be very balanced.
|
Tkachuk isn't a good two way player, really. And he's never really excelled off-wing either.

Tkachuk is one of the best defensive forwards on the Flames..
Him, Mangiapane and Lucic were the 3 best 5v5 defensive players for the Flames by most metrics last season.
No idea what you're talking about.

Tkachuk is the best two-way forward on the team.

Can Monahan even play wing?
Did he even in junior?
Moving from wing to center is a bigger transition sure, but not playing the spot for 7 plus years plus then being expected to do so on the top line is a big ask.

With the way Monahan is talked about on here I'm starting to wonder if he can actually do anything.
I'm kidding, but it seems like there are some people who genuinely think he can't do a damn thing well outside of scoring garbage goals.

With the Flames seemingly moving Bennett and Lindholm to center it does all of a sudden leave our top center for the last 6 years with far less certainty. If the Jets didn’t make the move for Statsny and have Perfetti fall into their lap I think there would be some merit for both teams for a Monahan-Laine swap.
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Laine
Gaudreau-Bennett-Dube
Mangipane-Backlund-Leivo
Lucic-Ryan-Simon
Nordstrom
That one trade and free agent shuffling of the bottom 6 sure shakes the team up

Where is this quote that said they will definitively play Lindholm at center?
The quote I remember was they were looking at/considering trying Lindholm at center.
It didn’t sound as concrete as the comment just made about Bennett.
I don’t see the Flames putting Monahan or Backlund on the wing so unless they plan to bury Bennett on the 4th line again I just don’t see this happening on the regular (barring trades).
It’s more saying Lindholm is an option there, they have more options now with all the additions and the number of guys who can play both center and wing.

Yeah the Lindholm at centre talk was about the team having the option to do so if they need to.
Bennett as centre is a lock, Lindholm isn’t (and shouldn’t be - in my eyes). Lindy is a top line RW.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Nordstrom/Simon - Ryan - Leivo
Simon/Nordstrom
That’s how things should start. Best depth we’ve had on this team since 08/09, and I think it will prove to be better than that roster at it’s pretty-injury peak.

I still want to keep Monahan as more of a long term option. If you trade Monahan and Backlund games slips then you are left with just Lindholm and hoping you can promote someone internally. If that doesn't happen the team is big trouble.

There’s never been a definitive statement that Lindholm is moving to centre. But Treliving said he made moves to give the coaching staff the option of moving Lindholm to centre. I’m betting Treliving did this because he knows the coaching staff wants that option. Also, I know ppl like Monahan at centre, but I think the Flames need a change, and I liked Lindholm’s 26 games at centre quite a bit. I think Lindholm, Backlund, Bennett and Ryan is the way to go.

He was an integral part of one of the best shutdown lines in the league... how do you figure he’s not a good 2way forward, I’ve never heard this before?

“I think we really want to explore whether or not we have a better lineup with Elias Lindholm at centre than right-wing,” said Flames coach Geoff Ward...
...he was a really effective player for us in the middle. You saw how much life he had. I think he really does see himself as a centreman – always has. I think he got some energy playing the position he grew up playing. We’ve got to take a look at that for sure. It’s a natural position for him – he’s certainly shown that.”

not a definitive statement, but certainly a strong preference for Lindy as C

It's an exploration, and a good coach would see that through and play with the line-up to try and maximize what he has. The test is really between Monahan and Lindholm, as Monahan is the player not getting the job done at the centre position.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Monahan
I'd be open to that.

I would prefer them to start/try with JG and SM apart, I think SM would improve a step not defering to JG all the time.

I think Monahan would synergize well with Dube or Mangiapane

Yeah, I’m open to reuniting Gaudreau and Monahan, but I’d like to switch up the top 6 and try for two balanced lines rather than one shut down line and one offensive line.

I can’t agree. He’s just not that great defensively. He’s too slow footed to be great positionally. People think he is because he’s gritty. But I just think he gets caught a fair bit.

Great offensive players can also have good metrics - the offence make up for defence.
I don’t think Tkachuk is good enough defensively to cover for Johnny and Monahan. He can’t take Lindholm’s place that way. Especially off wing.

The same metrics say McDavid and Draisaitl are two of the worst defensive players in the league. If that level of offence doesn't ‘make up for’ bad defensive numbers, then offence doesn't make up for defence, period. Your argument doesn't hold up.
