IDK, could have been good for Calgary’s casino funded charities.
I can see it now. Kidsport sues Kane for 8 million for unpaid charity casino debt.

Well, someone has a gambling problem. That ain't no ordinary debt.
Hey Evander. Remember when I got caught stealing all those watches from Sears? Well, that's nothing, because youuuuuu have a gambling problem! And remember when I let that escaped lunatic in the house 'cause he was dressed like Santa Claus? Well, yooooouuuuuuu have a gambling problem!

I understand peoples hatred for the guy, but how come when things come to light about substance abuse problems, fans are all "That's too bad. I wish him all the best! Really hope he gets the help he needs!" but with this situation, many people are going "I'm not surprised. He deserves it. He's an idiot."?
Substance abuse problems and gambling problems are basically the same. Both are horrible addictions/diseases that are very hard to overcome.
I hate the player, but man do I hope Kane gets the help he needs. Some people just don't know what to do when tons of money immediately comes their way. It's very unfortunate. Hopefully he learns a valuable lesson here and gets someone to help take care of his money/future earnings from this point.

You’re not wrong about the addiction aspect, but the distinction in my mind is with substance abuse it can end your life. In his case this puts him in a bad financial situation and wasn’t caused by something he couldn’t control. They’re warned about this stuff. His health physically is in no disarray, so I’m fine with poking him in this situation. It’s a little ridiculous to be in such bad debt that you have to have a puzzled look on your face on how it got so bad.

Because Kane took pride is posting pictures with winnings from Vegas and stacks of money on his half naked body?
Not everyone deserves sympathy

Part of me wants to laugh and part of me feels bad that he doesn’t have anyone in his life who could guide him and help prevent this from happening.
Maybe he does and simply didn't listen to them? He doesn't strike me as the sharpest pencil in the box and it seems like a lifestyle of excess is what he strived for.
Estimated career earnings so far are roughly $53 million.
I hate myself for not being better with money when the oil patch was booming, but I can't imagine how I would feel if I squandered that much gross income.

Michael Jordan was/is a complete degenerate gambler, MJ didn't want to just the the best athlete, he wanted to be the richest athlete of all time. I've heard people say that he was betting on the bulls every game during their heyday, and that Atlantic city was were he liked to gamble and the only way to make big bets on sports during that time and place was through the mafia. The conspiracy then goes that MJs dad was killed by the mafia because MJ was refusing to pay his debt and these events led to MJ getting kicked out of the NBA for a year.
Considering MJ is possibly the most influential athlete in north american sports history, I wonder how much of his gambling addiction was passed on to younger athletes.
