I think they can, "if they were on their roster at the most recent trade deadline" I don't think there is any exception to this aside from the "acquiring a player after the trade deadline with 1 year left on the contract" where they can sign a 8 year extension at the opening of free agency.

Yeah, once they're in the final year of their contracts, they can be signed to extensions and can sign 8 year deals with whoever holds their rights at the time.
The only times a player can't sign an 8 year contract is if his last contract is expired and he is a UFA, or if he's traded after the trade deadline in the final year of his contract. There's also situations like Tkachuk, where his contract was expired but he was still an RFA, so he could sign an 8 year deal with the Flames but no one else.

I hope they hold onto both, nether re-sign with the team and they lose them both for absolutely nothing.

My guess is draisaitl 15, MCD 18. Really bad timing with the Matthews contract as well as the monster cap rise.

I would hate that as those would be bargain contracts over 8 years. I can't see either accepting that kind of money. McDavid should be asking for close to $20 million/season in three years.

Imagine having two of the best players in the game right now and all you have to show for them over a near decade is one WCF loss.

Can he, I mean isn't there a cap on max you can offer a player? Honest question.

I think it is 20% of the cap.

The cap could be 95 million when they are free agents, so they could get max deals each 19 million per season for 8 years each.

This will be the biggest factor. Mathews will likely go higher than Mackinnon did. My guess will be $13.5 mil per year.
Leon and Connor will both want more than Mathews gets. Leon will be up first and got for slightly more than Mathews and Connor will come in a get more than everyone again.
Leon's contract is the one that will kill the Oilers, but they have to cave as McDavid won't stay without him.

Yes, and then the Oilers would have to find a way to build the rest of the team for $57 million when every other team is spending millions more.
There's a perfectly good reason why nobody signs players to cap-maximum deals.
Of course if anyone ignores that good reason, it will be the No Good Oilers. So you may be right.

they could easily sign McDavid to 20 million year, dont forget that all the leagues other stars will play in Edmonton for league minimum just to play with him. at least that is what comes out of mullett town

And $9.25 M of that goes to Nurse.
That leave that $47.75 for 19 players?
