nope. they advance the the NCAA Hockey tournament. It's like the basketball tourney except it starts at the sweet 16.
There are 5 conferences in NCAA hockey. The playoff winner from each conference gets an automatic berth in the tournament. The final 11 seeds are decided by other criteria, including but not limited to the teams record against other opposition that are being considered for the tournament, as well as head to head matchups. It's the usual way the NCAA makes things seem like they aren't being done fairly.
For example if Providence losses to UMass-Lowell this weekend there is a good chance UNH advances (UNH willl likely be in regardless) to the NCAA tournament and Providence's season is finished, even though Providence beat them in the playoffs and finished ahead of them in the hockey east standings.

Here is an explanation on how Providence can get in.
Quote:
Both teams have slim chances of making the NCAAs without winning the Hockey East championship. But there are some good possibilities. However, it's oddly possible for both to make the NCAAs and Hockey East gets five teams in. BU has a slightly better chance than Providence of making the NCAAs if it loses the final game, and it largely hinges on Miami winning the CCHA tournament (go figure). According to Scott McLaughlin, the way to get five Hockey East teams in goes like this: Providence over BU in the Hockey East final, favorites win everywhere else, Union loses the ECAC consolation game.

Sounds like Providence is Gillies and not much else right now.

Another good guy to follow for HE updates is @joemeloni.
Also he hates the Canucks, so that's a bonus for some of you.
It does sound like Gillies is having a good game.

I can't remember a team being held in by a goalie that much since the Flames-Red Wings series.

Wow, 3-2 Terriers now over BC after 2 periods, BC is outshooting BU 31-16. This game should be over already, yet BC is losing.
Time for some late game heroics from Johnny Hockey! *knock on wood*
Also, Gaudreau has 1 assist already tonight and Arnold has 1 goal.

Gaudreau with a 5 minute major to start the third, and BU capitalizes, 4-2 now with 4 minutes of powerplay left still.
Apparently the penalty was for cross-checking, wonder what happened to make it a major?
