2022-23 Flu/covid/RSV season
So it seems as though a mixture of influenza, covid, and RSV is absolutely hammering the city. Im really not sure what it is that my entire family has had the last week (couple negative covid tests), but it is definitely the worst virus I have dealt with since childhood, and the sickest my kids have ever been. Just doesn’t go away, fever of 102-103 type stuff.
Wait times at the local ERs have been insane the last week or so, and children’s tylenol and advil is sold out virtually everywhere.
Fun few months ahead.
Btw, Im assuming this can go in general area as the children’s pain medicine shortage, ER wait times, and RSV outbreak are all pretty big non-covid stories.

You will want to follow the tweets to the threads for the full story, but interesting discussions on why we are seeing this happen.

2 weeks ago my family and I have been hit with an absolutely nasty upper chest virus. I have been coughing all day, everyday for a couple weeks and it is only now starting to get a bit better. This was accompanied by fatigue, weakness and low grade fever. I've test for covid 4-5 times throughout and all have come back negative. However, as someone who got Covid in May, this seems 10x worse.
Nasty stuff out there right now.

We have this (something) in our house.
I've been in bed all weekend. Tired, fever, muscle soreness, no strength, painful cough, runny nose. Negative covid test today. Only took the test because my smell is gone.
Had my latest covid and flu shots Thursday. Older child started with the fever on Friday. Oops. I wonder if it's worse for me because of the shots on Thursday.
Baby and wife are now experiencing it. Older child seems to be getting better. Here's hoping we recover soon.

Kid and I had an amazingly #### cold a few weeks ago, too about 2.5 weeks to clear up, and now we both have covid. Somehow my wife has been spared from the entire thing.

We're going to need to send your wife to a lab to be studied.

No joke, I think she's got some kind of otherworldly immune system.

Yup, similar to everyone else we had a bad cold/colds roll through our house too. Pretty much the whole month of October someone was sick. I ended up with a sinus infection, which was the first one in about 5 years. I suspect we had two different viruses when all was said and done. I’ve lost count of how many rapid tests we did, but had to be over 10 and all were negative. My mom helps look after the kids every so often and she ended up with COVID, so thankfully we hadn’t visited her before she tested positive, so we did miss that one. Somehow the day home lady has stayed healthy, but attendance has been pretty hilarious. Our kids missed a bunch of days and then when they went back all the families were alternating who had the various bugs.

We've missed much of the school year viruses so far which is surprising. My one kid had a slight fever and some other mild symptoms about a month ago but it only lasted a couple of days. My other kid got sick on Thursday night and woke up with a fever. He was complaining that night about his legs being sore but the only symptoms he had was the fever and sore legs. By Saturday morning he was perfectly fine and we went skating later that night. His friend at school had the same thing where he got sick on Wednesday, stayed home Thursday and was fine by Friday morning.

Our school sent an email on Friday alerting parents to a "Respiratory Outbreak", without specifying RSV, COVID, Flu or otherwise. Our kids have been on again / off again sick for a couple of weeks and we knew something was up... A few weeks ago for class picture day, 60% of the class was out sick!
My wife was at the Dr. today (unrelated), and was told the consensus among Drs (according to hers) is this there is a lot of COVID variants out there right now, going undetected with false negatives, etc. That, combined with the "immunity debt" mentioned in Fuzz's links means that everyone is going to be sick this winter. A lot.

I swear my wife is the same. I mean, she does get sinus infections and sometimes those linger, but more often than not, when a sickness runs through the house she escapes it.
I'm quite sure all three kids and I had Covid in January/February 2020 and my wife didn't.

We've had it. Hit the entire family. Basically a week of feeling absolute trash, and then feeling normalish (6/10 or 7/10) but all still with deep chest cough.

RSV hospitalized our little guy for a few days when he was just over a year old. Here we are nearly a year later and I'm paranoid it could happen again. I'm desperately hoping his immune system is much more equipped to deal with things now that he's older. He's fully vaccinated for everything as well so finger's crossed.

I thought you could only get pink eye from getting feces in your eye.

Interestingly there are 3 types!
Quote:
Viral Conjunctivitis
- Can occur with symptoms of a cold, flu, or other respiratory infection
- Usually begins in one eye and may spread to the other eye within days
- Discharge from the eye is usually watery rather than thick
Bacterial Conjunctivitis
- More commonly associated with discharge (pus), which can lead to eyelids sticking together
- Sometimes occurs with an ear infection
Allergic Conjunctivitis
- Usually occurs in both eyes
- Can produce intense itching, tearing, and swelling in the eyes
- May occur with symptoms of allergies, such as an itchy nose, sneezing, a scratchy throat, or asthma
|

I learned this about a month ago when it turned out I had the allergic type. The intense itching gave it away. That, and I don't rub feces in my eye.

That's interesting. Didn't know that, either.
It'll always be the ####-in-the-eye affliction to me, though.

Timely. The first time our two year old got sick this fall he had viral conjunctivitis as one of his symptoms…I to thought it was only from poop, but apparently it is not.
Also, there is no OTC bacterial pink eye drops in all of Calgary.
