Icon48 NHL denies culpability in Steve Montador death

Quote:
The National Hockey League alleges in a new court filing that it is not to blame for any of the injuries or health problems suffered by former NHL player Steve Montador, who was posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after his death in 2015.

Standard opening legal defence no doubt, but one that isn't going to sit well with either the players nor the public.

I do hope these concussion lawsuits end up costing all the leagues an astronomical amount of money.

Look after your players. You might not have known back in the eighties all the science behind concussions. You may not have known in the 90s. You may not have had all the facts in the 2000s.

You do now. Steve Montador would be alive right now had he gone into data processing and not accumulated 90 hockey fights + thousands of subconcussive impacts over 25 years.

The NHL as an entity didn't kill Montador. But they could have had systems in place to deal with players having issues after retirement. They didn't, and now a man is dead. Stop telling us there's nothing you could have done when there very clearly is, and stop being okay with not doing enough.

It could mean the end of the NFL as we know it. Bob Costas has suggested as much.

There's nothing wrong with that.

I had actually forgotten Montador had died. Now I'm a little bummed.

The sheer amount of money the leagues and owners make off the players backs, namely the NFL without guaranteed contracts is absurd. The least they can do is cover healthcare and treatment for their retirees. Nhl needs to be very careful here.

Ken Dryden's book Game Change, which chronicles Steve Montador's life and death, as a back-drop to the overall conversation about how the sport needs to evolve, is a must read. But utterly heart-breaking.

Watch the Joe Murphy video on YouTube. These stories are too sad.
