That is surprisingly...simple.
Simmonds has been actively declining, so I guess this shouldn't be as surprising as it is.

That's a great deal for NJ actually.
Feel bad for Simmonds though, he's never been able to cash in with a big contract despite some strong production and a big role on Philly especially.

Wow, that's a great contract.
Hope the Flames can get Ferland for something similar.

That's surprisingly reasonable. I mean, 5 mil, but only 1 year? His performance post trade really hurt him, I figured he'd get a Brouwer deal

Yea poor guy has only earned like $35M in his career. Hope he gets enough food stamps to feed himself.

Agree with others. $5 million is a bit of money for Simmonds, but for 1 year it's perfect, especially for the Devils who are clearly in a transition period and have cap to burn in the short term.

Devils are not a cap team yet. It's a fantastic low risk high reward signing and Simmonds doesn't have to move

Well of course. But it's relative to his peers, obviously.

Cap to burn? Have they met Neal and Stone?

1 year, great. 5mil, probably 3x more than I would be interested in. Glad we didn't land this one.

This is a great opportunity for Simmonds to show the NHL whether he still has anything decent left in his tank.

That's the way to do it. $5M/1-yr for a 30-yr old proven tough and skilled player with great work ethics and no downside risk whatsoever. Absolutely a great contract.

And if they're out by the deadline they'll trade him for a decent return
