It turns out that Meier was only on San Jose's roster for 34 games in his rookie year, so he didn't accrue a season of professional experience under the terms of the CBA. This means he will still be an RFA at the expiration of this contract.
Apparently, this contract is structured so that he'll get around $10 million in the final year, which means that will be his qualifying offer if the Sharks (or whatever team he's on at the time) want to retain his RFA rights.
