Good for him. Him and Wilson are going to be a pain to play against.

I just can't believe it. Hathaway is exactly what Calgary is missing - a tough gritty skater that plays with intensity and doesn't get pushed around. And they let him walk over a couple hundred thousand dollars?

IMO it was the term. Probably gun shy giving a guy 4 years if he pulls a Bouma.

Too bad the Ducks locked up Derek Grant earlier this spring. Would've been okay bringing him back in as a Hathaway replacement.

Weren't worried about Brouwer and Neal. Worried about Hathaway?

I like the player, more than most I'm guessing. But you have to keep the fourth line on league min or first contracts.
Good move to let him slide.
There will be opportunities within, or vets that cut shut out in musical chairs later this summer.

Flames had very little sandpaper players on the roster now they got just that much softer. Disappointed Treliving could reach a deal with Hathaway.
Flames really need to improve this missing element to their team. 1.5m per year and Trelivng let's him walk what a joke.

Four years is a long time for a 27 year old who only became a full time nhl'er this season and I really doubt Treliving "let him walk ',that's foolish talk IMO.
Hathaway is your typical nhl'er when he peaks but flames out rather quickly. Love the jam he brought this season but he's not the type you invest more than two years into.

The only logical explanation is that he wanted to move. From the cap and term management perspective, the downside risk of him signing a four-year term and tanking immediately is negligible, financially. I am sad to see him leave. Loved watching him play.

Darn, can’t believe he got 4 years. The dough seemed to be where I expected, but the term seems pretty excessive. Good to see him getting his due, but he’s gonna be missed on that 4th line. He, Mangiapane and Ryan combined for maybe the best 4th line I’ve ever seen the Flames ice.

Is it not possible that Hathaway wanted to play out east, like the rumours suggested?
Sureloss had posted rumours which had him fielding numerous offers IIRC

Damn, this is a pretty big loss on the 4th line. I like Hathaway since his first game as a Flame. Sad to see him go, but he deserves to get paid. Caps got a good one.

He will be 28 in November so I can understand why the Flames let him go. He had a really good second half last year and now its got him a 4 year deal.

$1.5 million was right at the cutoff point for me. You can send him down and bury the majority of that (is it $975K you can bury?). And that amount should increase over the 4 years so the 4 years doesn't really scare me.
Bouma's AAV was worse. $2.2 million on a smaller cap.
He won't be easy for the Flames to replace as there is little forward depth in the system. It is possible as others have mentioned that he wanted the East Coast and may have turned down comparable money from the Flames.
With Frolik also likely gone, guys like Mangiapne, Dube and Quine going to have huge opportunity.

We lose him at 1.5M? Ridiculous that we didnt sign him. That's a great contract for what Hathaway brings.
Hathaway is exactly what the Calgary Flames need more of.
Disappointing news indeed.
