The trade itself was stupid because of the salary they were STILL taking on despite shedding a bunch.

But hey, that is what you get when you fall into a self-imposed cap hell structure that you are 100% responsible for.

Dubas has got to be one of the worst GMs in hockey.

Agreed he has been absolutely brutal. Pretty much the opposite as Treliving when it comes to RFA’s.

Nylander sits until December only to be overpaid by Dubas
Matthews is signed early in a deal that in my opinion has truly ruined the second contract for RFA’s. Yes the Oilers raised the bar with McDavid and Draisaitl but at least they maxed out the term (both deals look fine today much like the 6x6 they handed out years ago). Giving Matthews the second highest cap hit in the league and buying a single UFA year was beyond brutal.

I hope the Flames get Tkachuk done before they do something equally as brutal with Marner.

He had some leverage with Matthews in the sense that the deal didn't need to be signed immediately. At the very least he should have tried very hard to get another year or so.

The Nylander deal was horrid simply because at that point let him sit. Sign Marner, make sure you have as balanced a team as possible going into the new season, and then tell Nylander this is what is left for you and if you don't like it be prepared to sit forever.

But instead he basically went and threw away all the leverage he had and got nothing in return. Just terrible.

Wasn't it a thing that Nylander did not want to be traded because Toronto was starting to open their window? Or am I crazy?

Except that they were actual contenders and wanted all their players available for a playoff run, which makes total sense.

Anyway, I just went on Capfriendly and without too much difficulty I made a cap compliant 22 man roster for the leafs if they signed Marner at 10.5 AAV for 5 years, which seems fair enough. I can't imagine he'd make much more than that. Now, their bottom 6 includes Nic Petan and Kenny Agostino, and Cody Ceci is on their 2nd pairing, and they have exactly $15,301.00 in cap space, which... isn't ideal... but it is cap compliant! It can be done!

A 22 man roster with $15k of wiggle room is a recipe for disaster. If a player so much as gets the sniffles, they have to put them on LTIR

What's overlooked on the Leafs is one of the most coveted players in the league signing with the Leafs when most in the hockey world thought it would never happen.

Not excusing Dubas for any recent signings, but two factors

1) RFA signings suddenly trending towards basically getting UFA money wasn't his fault, and he coincidentally had two of the biggest RFA's in the league up for renewal.

2) The most highly south after, number one centre in the league picked your team when you couldn't really be planning for it......but you sign that contract and figure the rest out later.

Well, this is the "figure the rest out later". People are acting like this was all foreseen and poor GM'ing, but if Brad Treliving had Taveres fall into his lap at $11 he'd probably look like an idiot in cap compliancy in short order, as well.

It's fine, though. They're just doing the best they can to keep an incredible forward group together with a free superstar centre added in. They could trade one star forward for an incredible haul including young cost controlled assets, alleviate cap problems and still come out of this rebuild looking great.

The issue is, they didn't have to sign Cody Ceci. And it seems like they should have just traded his RFA rights for a bag of pucks rather than allow themselves to get to this point.

Yeah JT created a positive cap problem. Of course they are going to lose a big forward soon. They added one out of thin air.

Agree with everything except you could argue the Matthews deal is what caused these ridiculous aav's on contracts that take a first time RFA to UFA. No reason they shouldnt have got 7 years for that dollar value.
