Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin: It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
Goddam. Ermey was one of my favorite character actors, although he never varied much outside of his own persona. That opening scene in Full Metal Jacket is one of the greatest monologue performances I've ever seen. R.I.P.

Enlisted in the Marines when he was 17, spent 14 months in Vietnam before he was invalided out of the Marines as a E6
He picked up roles here and there, the chopper pilot in Apocalypse now.
He was bought on board as a technical advisor for Full Metal Jacket, but was bought in to the Role of Hartman when he was seen arranging some extras.
That whole dialogue was a combination of his writing and improvisation. He made about 60 movies and I remember his role in Saving Silverman as he played their gay former coach and was hilarious.
RIP Staff Sergent.

Every kid that came into basic training was quaking in their boots, because they expected the full metal jacket experience. I was almost sorry to see them dissapointed.

I just love that he was a consultant on Full Metal Jacket and basically berated the actor supposed to play the Gunnery Sgt and ended up just playing it himself.
You were amazing Lee.
