Sooo I'm looking at this Netflix thing. What are people watching. I'm on the website looking at Popular, Action & Adventure and Comedy and the selection is quite poor.

Is there a larger list I'm missing by not joining up. Right now I do HD PPV with Shaw 3-4 times a month, but these are for new releases.

I've had Netflix for a few months now and I haven't had one stutter yet. We watch an average of 3-4 movies a week. PS3 DMZ/Shaw Extreme/wired connection to Linksys Router.

What you see is what you get. As I mentioned before, I am a little surprised at what is available and what isn't. They have all released seasons of new shows like Heroes and Mad Men, but no Slapshot movie.

I just upgraded my internet connection, so hopefully the quality is a bit more uniform (my only real complaint with the service thus far). I am also going to disable HD to save some bandwidth, and on a 42" screen the difference is negligible.

What device are you using to watch it on? I have used PS3, iPhone, and PC and they all seem to be quite smooth. My little netbook can't really handle HD very well though, but on a 10 inch screen, there's no much of a point anyway.

Yeah, I mean netflix isn't fantastic, but for 8 dollars a month, it's totally worth the convenience. My wife and I have probably watched about 10-15 movies on it thus far in 4 months, so I haven't been milking it, but I just like having it around.

I also use Shaw PPV and itunes (for old stuff)

I would suggest it's something with your PC then. In addition to myself, I personally know 5 friends that all use it on either their PS3 or 360 and none of us have ever had a problem like this. We even use a PC with a projector in our lunch room without issue.

What does your CPU go up to while you are streaming something?

Are you getting stuttering like choppy playback, or pausing to buffer?

When you watch something in HD does it go in and out of HD resolution?

Although probably not related, but my brother-in-law had a problem with his internet connection where every X seconds (12 or something, IIRC), it would cause a stutter. It was only apparent in certain situations and didn't seem to make much sense. But it would literally drop out briefly at a set interval.

We took the router out of the equation and it was still happening. Despite resetting the modem a few times, it still persisted. I think that he eventually had Shaw out and they did something to fix it, but the problem was outside of his house/hardware/etc.

So - is the stuttering predictable and consistent? Try unplugging the modem, router, etc. for a minute or two to see if that helps. If not, try connecting your computer directly to the modem to see if it is your router.

I am tempted to think that it is either an internet connection problem or a hardware problem. It has probably existed for a while but it has only become apparent now that you're pushing things a bit by using Netflix.

The best way I can describe Netflix, which I've said here before too, is that it's a great service for those who feel like watching a genre, rather than a specific movie.

It's not meant to replace Shaw, Bell or the like's VOD service, when it comes to new releases. But, it's a decient archive of older films as far as I'm concerned, and for $8 a month, with unlimited use, there's not a day where we're not watching something, from Kids shows, to Mad Men, to the occasional movie.

There have been times where I've thought to search for a random movie here or there, but I never expect it to be there. I've been pleasantly surprised from time to time, but it's not a good vehicle for doing so.

So if you enjoy new releases, don't waste your time or money. But if you've found yourself walking the isles at those old things called video stores, in the older sections looking for something to pop out at you, that's what Netflix does best right now.

Just watched a bunch of episodes of "Thumb's Up" and it's pretty entertaining.

Also if you like close up photography of vaginas you could try "Petals."

I'm on week two of cancelled cable and only Netflix and still enjoying it. I also just got a prepaid American Visa in the mail so tomorrow I'm going to figure out how to get American Netflix on my PS3.

This is all covered in that other thread, that is back a page or 2 by now.

edit: This thread

The short answer is there is a service you can sign up for that will bypass the parts where they actually check.
