And those assists were big time ones. McDavid created all of them, Neal, to his credit, finished. But most players would have.

That's a tough sell when every single member of the top unit had a career year in powerplay production. All five of them were in the top-50 in powerplay points—how does that happen when the top unit is not among the top-ten powerplay units?

This just in: Klefbom and RNH play on a line with McDavid this year.

Lol. The guy said #1 PP unit was 18th in the league. Not overall PP.

Fixed my post referring to that stat for correction. I was entirely referring to the team being 18th in PP%, not the number one unit.

I would have given Neal another year but not sure how his salary would have factored into the Chucky signing/cap situation (whether moving Frolic would have been enough etc.)...

your "point" was that he doesn't play on a line with McDavid...when he does play on a power play line with McDavid and that is how he has scored his goals

common denominator is....you guessed it

No one calls it a PP line. It's a PP unit.

I'm happy for Neal, I hope he does well. In the same vein, I hope Lucic has a great year too. I don't get the notion that you have to wish ill will on someone just because they're no longer on your team.

Ryan was brought in as a 3rd line C. Bennett never got even a month run in the top 6 after.

Jankowski seemed poised to replace Backlund as #2C.

Can't be sarcastic about the depth of the Flames.
------

Just imagine the sales pitch that the Flames gave to Neal to get him to sign as a UFA.

Pretty sure it included that he was what the Flames top-6 was missing and he would be on the 1st PP unit.

He gets off to a poor start and he is playing 10-12 minutes a game with depth players that would only get top-6 minutes with 2 injuries to the regular top-6.

Yep Neal was awful, but his treatment here was way below his expectations.
I don't think the Flames are deep on RW, and the fact that Neal was unable to cement a top 6 role is more because of his poor play, not lack of opportunity.

lol this guy...so what is your point exactly?

Neal is scoring largely with help from McDavid so you pointing out they aren't on a line technically is irrelevant.

They are on the ice together...call it whatever you want

Real (Deal) talk: Neal just wanted the free trip to China.

Regularly I'd agree, but it's different territory when this player plays for the Oilers.

Lucic adds more to the Flames than Neal did and vice versa. End of story. Let’s move on.

Way I see it...

2019-20 Neal might be an upgrade on 2019-20 Lucic. He might even be a huge upgrade.

But 2019-20 Lucic is already an upgrade on 2018-19 Neal... and if the trade hadn't happened, 2019-20 Neal might not exist as we know him.

I'm sure the Oilers feel great about this but I'm not convinced it's a zero-sum equation
